Where would I go to look up a business that was operating in 1880. The address is 33 Porchester Road W2. I want to know if there was a fabric shop or tailors shop etc there. In the 1881 census the person I am following is a drapers assistant and there seems to be lots of people living there with that occupation, so which business were they working for? All help gratefully accepted. |

Following Quoy's link, and searching for directories in London in the 1880's and then searching for Porchester within the 1882 Post Office Directory, there are 12 hits, so it does not take long to arrive at Porchester Rd in section 1 (Official and Street Directory section). Unfortunately, it is very out of focus. It looks as if both 33 and 35 Porchester Rd are occupied by Davies, Robt Owen, linen drpr (presumably draper). |

Yes, confirmed by the Commercial section, which is indexed alphabetically by surname. |

This may be him in 1901, since he is listed as a draper, with children born in Paddington: |
