Can anyone tell me how I would know what affliction an ancestor had out of the above if there was a cross or a tick in this column against their name on a Census? |

The enumerator was required to write the nature of the affliction in the final column |

Usually the cross or tick is put there to denote someone born outside of the county. Is that the case here? If there was an infirmity it was noted what it was. |

Gaynor - you suppose incorrectly. The situation is probably as MM describes - look at the X-ed individuals on that and the adjacent pages and see what they had in common. |

The tick or mark in that last column is much more likely to have been made by someone checking off the details on the original record book. The actual affliction was supposed to be written out. I've seen things like Lame from Birth as well as the ones cited above. |

On the 1901 one of my lott was stated as having one eye, and one of the sons was a "stammerer through fright" |

Thankyou all for you valued comments. It is only by asking what seems a simple question that we learn so much. |

My great aunt was deaf and dumb and was marked as such in the census. I never met her but my grandad had told me. Her name was Dessie and one enumerator put her down as Jessie and I thought that might have been her real name and she couldn't say it properly, but I have found another Dessie in the family. All her certificates are marked Dessie. |
