Perhaps it may be because someone occasionally sends a message if you have more than one thread on a similar topic - stating it is GR policy not to have more than one thread. They may have emailed after your posting.

It's lovely when a complete stranger comes forward to share their expertise - a great help.

Sorry Nicky - I shouldn't have butted into your thread and I can understand your frustration. Hope whoever it was reads your good point.

Deidre....... No need for apoligies to me or anyone else......... like has already been said us "seasoned researchers" seem to forget what its like to be a newby....

InspectorGreenPen...{ love the name by the way}...........Yes you are correct if people choose to delete their thread they are quite entitled to, in the same we choose to help...we arn`t press ganged in to it, so really can`t demand that anyone behaves in a certain way that we expect them to.

I posted this thread more because i was frustrated by what had happened, and not that I thought anyone was being rude, or that they hadn`t said thank you or behaved unreasonably, and i certainly didn`t mean to offend anyone.

Thank you all for your input................

Nicky

Hi Wendy :)

Anything you put in your threads, it can appear on google searches.

Thanks LIR - yes' I've done it before - after someone on here suggested that I look up the meaning of 'Wen' in the dictionary, which I was previously and what most of my friends and family always call me. It's not pleasant.

Wendy.

I guessed you were called Wendy. However if you click onto your board name it will give your real name.
Im not sure if you are still able to do artistic names now because at one time you could use a name with spaces.
Now it has to be one name without spaces. I hope that makes sense

Wendiwoo, once you've decided on your new screen name, click on "my account" on the top green bar. You'll be asked to re-enter your password and then go about half way down the screen to "Community Settings" and click there to change your screen name.

Wend Report 17 Feb 2010 19:58

Oh, I see - thanks Quinsgrain. Is that how you know my real name? Actually, I think I'll change Wendiwoo - any suggestions? Nothing rude please. I'd quite like to have one of those pretty artistic ones, but don't know how to do it.

Wendy.
I think what is meant is if you google a persons name you can frequently find the person being looked for on say Ancestry or Roots chat

Often a good way to find people. Thats why Googling in advised because the answer might already be out there

Wish I could be neat and tidy like your wife Inspector GP. My inbox is like my knicker drawer (and my overflowing ironing basket)!

SRS - you've put the wotnots up me - what d'you mean info left on the internet appears in google searches??? What sort of info?

I agree with inspector green pen. Also some people don't like having their info on the Internet too long as it appears in google searches.

InspectorGreenPen

InspectorGreenPen Report 17 Feb 2010 15:24

Whilst I agree that it isn't necessary, if people wish to delete their threads then that is their choice. It doesn't mean to say that they are ungrateful nor what they are doing is wrong. Whilst a simple thankyou is always welcome I have stopped getting worked up if one doesn't appear.

I know a lot of people who like to have everything neat and tidy. My wife for example can't stand having email or messages hanging around, so they get deleted straight away. I have suggested that there is no need but this is the way she prefers to do things.

Hi Deidre , i think perhaps your reply highlights something that we tend to forget when we've been here a while,

ie that someone new asking for help , eg "Can you find my grandmothers birth" often gets that PLUS a huge lump of info from census' etc.... very hard to take in as to who is who and how they are connected sometimes.

I think the best tip for that is to say "thanks for all that " save it somewhere or print it off (which i find easier to grasp if its on paper not the screen lol) and just go back to it when you actually come to need it . :)

I apologise, Nickydownsouth, though I was not the guilty party in your case. Thing is have recently started and didn't know people were so helpful and then became inundated and puzzled and frustrated as to what goes where - I am no good at organising my leads and contacts and so must seem very rude to a whole lot of you. Now I am browsing through and yours was top of the list so I hope others will read and accept my apology if I have offended.

It could be Cynthia.......I don`t think its done in Malice, just frustrating for us helpers...

Like Lyndsey said, a 2nd option to be sure you want to delete would be a very good option.........

Hi Nicky, don't know if this helps but I received this pm yesterday after sending a message to someone.

Thanks Cynthia,
I seem to have got in a muddle with this. I found the replies, but didn't really understand the answers. I have now deleted question, I'll obviously need to understand how to use this properly before I try again.
Thanks for your help

I have asked her to post again and explain what she was struggling with and someone would surely help her.

What do you think??? Is this a possible reason why some delete? Cx.

Nickydownsouth

Nickydownsouth Report 17 Feb 2010 11:20

Thanks both of you for your comments...... I know this happens all the time, I add to a lot of threads, but this had taken ages to find the information, if they`d PM`d me and then deleted it wouldn`t be so bad.

People don`t seem to realise that leaving threads on here is often so useful, as when you get further back with more information you can refer to earlier findings.... I have threads on here going back years, and just occasionally I do look back and find some vital bit of information that didn`t tie in at the time, but now with more research is a match...

Had the same thing happen to me a few days ago.

Found a fair bit of information regarding the Mountstephens family in Plymouth.

The person came along ... took the information ... did not acknowledge and ... deleted the post. All this happened within a two hour time span.

Thought maybe they had sent a thanks and perhaps pressed a wrong button and deleted by mistake ... but no, I later found profuse thanks to another query they had posted at an ealier date ... so this person obviously knows how the system works.

It happens all the time, people don't realise that if they leave their thread on the boards it could become a vital link.

Not everyone is researching the same family at the same time.I've had replies 2 years later.
How many old messages do you see being answered ? Lots.

These messages don't take any room on the computer so don't need to be deleted, trees take years to build properly , cost money, and there is no quick fix.

Most sites have a second option after pressing delete, asking if you are sure you want to delete Yes/No , which might save some accidental deletions?
