On my computer an icon keeps popping up telling me that I have viruses in my computer but when I click on to get rid of them they want to charge me $49.95. I have Windows free antivirus programme updates installed automatically. Can anyone tell me how I can get rid of this Security Tool warning. Hope you can understand this.

Thanks a lot
Barbara

When I entered the "Community" site this morning I got a message saying AVG had detected a Virus and blocked entry.

I followed the prompts it gave and it cleared and let me in

Not had it happen before

i had four viruses on genes the other day, mine prompted me to close the programme down, which i did. Hasn't happened again since.

It happened when I came on to genes this afternoon, but a notice "Security Tool Warning" keeps popping up and I cannot get access to to my security settings. Also it keeps crashing and it takes ages to get back so if I do not reply to anybody I'm sorry, but cannot get access to PC.

This Is a virus or malware / adware problem so you can't ignore it. You need to run a scan as soon as possible, both for viruses and for adware.

This has happened to me today and yesterday while on here. Luckily my Norton has blocked it, it comes up Fake Anti virus install on my Norton.

I got a similar warning yesterday (and recall I have had it before). On trying to close it it ran a scan anyway and told me I had hundreds of Trojans and so on. It looked like an authentic Windows message, but I managed to google it where I was told it was a scam. However, to get rid of it I had to press CTRL/ALT/DEL and close the program.

Needless to say, I then ran a full scan using my own virus checker and it found nothing.

If you're getting this on Genes are you on

www.genesreunited.co.uk?

If so, switch to www.genesreunited.co.za where there are less ads.

There is a thread on Rootschat about people having a virus warning coming up when they try to come onto this site.

The same thing happened before on here and it was found to be something in one of the ads.

My antivirus software blocks all ads.

The real point of these programs is to frighten you by telling you there are dozens of viruses / trojans then trying to encourage you to pay for "the cure"
They may look authentic Windows warnings but generally any anti-virus program would stop the virus rather than tell you how many you had!
As mentioned by Madmeg, do not click on the screen at all to close it down as it probably won't let you.
Merely press these three keys together..................

Ctrl........Alt......Delete which will open Task Manager.

A small menu will open allowing you to choose which open program to close down.

Once you have closed it down, run a scan just to check everything is clean.
The following Malwarebytes is good for a scan. Download and run.

http://www.filehippo.com/download_malwarebytes_anti_malware/

as is Spybot................

http://www.filehippo.com/download_spybot_search_destroy/

Be careful out there!

Never open any of these warning messages, even if they appear to come from your installed anti virus program. Instead go straight to your anti virus programme and run a scan. Sometimes problems will remain if you have a virus/trojan which your AV program does not remove. in that case I can strongly recommend an anti malware program called Malware Bytes.

This is a freeware program and it can be downloaded from

www.malwarebytes.org

Go to the above link, and download the program by clicking on 'Download Free Version' in the blue box on the LHS of the page.

I have used this software three times in the last two years on three different computers belonging to friends, and it always finds and removes bugs which have been missed by other software. PM me if you need any help using the program.

Suggest you leave it on your desktop for future use if needed, just remember to update it before use.

Thank you all, I did not see this yesterday when I was being 'got at' by one of these scams.
I knew there was nothing wrong with my Computer but the *&%$^$ thing would not leave me alone. I just shut down after making sure that I was safe and this morning all is back to normal.
Good luck to us all, with these crooks around.

It's not just genes, it's also coming from applications on facebook.

I had win32:adware-gen [adw] infected my laptop yesterday, and my OH has had win32 parite this morning.

Both are worms. On googling mine, it latches on to your system restore, restoring itself from your restore points, so getting rid of it might see it come back again. The way round this is to turn OFF system restore, deleting all restore points, run your AV and get rid of the virus, then turn the system restore back on, setting a new restore point to your nice clean system.

I have reported this to GR. Twice in the last 2 days I have entered this site through GR emails (one from them with updates and one from another member. My Avast security detected a virus both times. Support have come back to me saying they suspect there may be a virus in one of the ads on the page. They are checking all the ads to try and find it.

SylviaInCanada

SylviaInCanada Report 16 Feb 2010 07:10

Friends Reunited, the parent site of GR, has actually removed ads from their site this weekend because people were getting the virus warnings. They are getting their ad company to check all ads to ensure that none of them have viruses embedded in them.

I got the warning on here about 4 hours ago, closed the site down, and now seem to be OK.

COMPUTER BACK AGAIN. Could not get rid of the virus as it would not let me run my antivirus programme or any other programmes for that matter, Had to take it in for repair and they said they had had a lot of people with the same problem and the free AVG was not coping with this virus. They originally told me it would be £30 to get rid of the virus + £15 for new AVG software (which they recommended) I took their advice let computer with them. On picking it up this a.m. they only charged me £35 which I thought was worth every penny.

Thank you everybody for your suggestions which I will keep for the future, but hopefully will not need it.
