Anyone know what a Sawyer did please? Would it be connected to carpentry?

Yes, isn't it a carpenter?

actually it looks as though a sawyer's job is to specifically saw wood into planks.

No thank you, I've got a sawyer as an occupation for one of my ancestors, I just presumed he was a carpenter.

Glad we both got sorted. I just found another explanation too......
Sawyer/Timber Mill/Pit worker. Sawing Timber.

Seems to explain it a little more.

My wife's gg grandfather was a sawyer at Liverpool docks in the mid 1800's. They worked in pairs, Top-dog and Under-dog

The tree was fixed across the top of a pit. The Top-dog worked from above and guided the saw towards him as it cut along the length of the tree, he also pulled the blade up on the non-cutting stroke.

The Under-dog worked inside the pit, and did all the hard work pulling the saw down on the cutting stroke. He also got covered in sawdust in the process....!

One of my ancestors was a 'stone sawyer' - what would that be?

Thank you for those added comments. Stone sawyer, is that like a mason but perhaps just cutting blocks of stone? Not sure, have you googled?

quite likely he would be involved in stone cutting, or masonry, they saw stone/marble, etc in a similar way to cutting wood.....

Yes, that's it SRS - the Stone Mason's mate. Ta

Thanks too Bob. Isn't it fascinating how surnames have evolved - when I meet 'somebody' Sawyer now, I shall think of that. A thread could be started of surnames that have evolved from working practices, pastimes, etc.
