I have just received the marriage certificate of Silas Taylor and Alice Taylor married in the Parish Church of Eccles February 21st 1859.
Can anyone tell me what age a person was regarded as a minor in 1859???
Details for Silas Taylor are: of full age, Bachelor, Frestian Cutter of Square Fold Cadishead, father James Taylor, Butcher.
Details for Alice Taylor, minor, Spinster, no occupation, Square Fold, Cadishead, father Mark Taylor, Boat House Driver.
I am having real trouble with these people, the mothers name on my Great Grandfathers birth certificate is Sarah Taylor, formerly Taylor, Sarah's mother was Alice Taylor and her father we think was Mark Taylor. Thinking the names of the mother and daughter had gotten confused in the marriage we ordered the certificate and now find that she is actually Alice.
I really don't know what to think, can anyone help, I am thinking I should get the birth certificate of their first born child Mark Taylor born c1859 Cadishead to see who the mother is recorded as, either Sarah or Alice.
Wonder if she could have been Alice Sarah Taylor, just that I haven't been able to find a birth for an Alice Sarah Taylor, but then I didn't know she was a minor.
Any suggestions or thoughts as to what path I should pursue to work all this out or find records would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks Taylor

Frestian Cutter ........ is more likely to be Fustian Cutter, fustia being a type of material.
Age of a minor in 1859 could be anything from 12 to 21
This entry from the 1861 Census is intriguing me ............ Silas is a Fustian Cutter. Sarah would have been under 21 in 1859. Thye ahve a son Mark. They live in Caddishead
1861 Census

Thanks Sylvia for your prompt reply, yes you have found the 1861 Census I was going on, their first son was Mark, but she is listed as Sarah Taylor, I could only find a marriage for a Silas Taylor and Alice Taylor so I thought blow it I will order the certificate and it is definately Alice, quite puzzled about what is going on here, just wondering if I should order the birth certificate for the first born Mark and see who the mother is listed as.
I am sure Alice and Sarah are the same person, just wondering whether she was born Alice Sarah , Sarah Alice or just plain Alice or Sarah, so I can find a birth for her.
On all the Census 1861 and after she is listed as Sarah, just can't understand why she is Alice on the marriage certificate. I should perhaps try and locate her mother Alice and father Mark on the 1841 & 1851 Census see if anything shows up there.
Thanks Taylor

It's a puzzle!
One of the main surnames for my OH is Taylor ................. but they are Yorkshire farmers and farm workers
hence my interest in looking at this thread for Taylor!
Have you ever been on Family Tree Forum?
It's a free site, started about 3 or 4 years by people who used to be on GR. It's basically member run and directed.
BUT ......... it has lots of forums, and people who help.
Go to www.familytreeforum.com/
You have to sign in ........ but I've had a lot of help with my families on there.
The other site that might be worth you investigating in terms of getting help from people is www.rootschat.com/
It is also a free site, with poeple helping others.

This looks as if it is the remarriage of Sarah's mother.
Marriages Dec 1851 (>99%)
TAYLOR Alice Barton 20 89 Wilbraham George Barton 20 89
Maybe Sarah was Alice Sarah but used her middle name because her mother was Alice.

Have a look at the HARDWICK MARRIAGE ACT 1754 -
The minimum age for marriage was 14 for a male and 12 for a female until
1929 when the age changed to 16.
Hope this helps.
