I have just read in my local paper that Brighton Council are proposing to close the History Centre. There is much in the centre for folk researching their Brighton Family History but the council will only allow people who live or work in Brighton or Hove to sign the e-petition against this.
PLEASE if you know someone who lives in Brighton or Hove, ask them to sign this e-petition.
To sign the petition go to www[.]brighton-hove[.]gov[.]uk REMOVE the brackets. Then go to the council and democracy section, Then ePetitions. Then Brighton History Centre.
You will have to regisiter to sign the petition.
At the moment 1128 have signed.

Tax Payers Alliance Jan 2009:

'..Brighton and Hove City Council have, with the stroke of a pen, sent half a million pounds into the pocket of the £170,000-a-year chief executive' ( a pay-off to a 54-year-old so he can retire early).

And no, his replacement didn't take a drop in salary!!!!!

I really hope the centre stays open but we all know that politicians are a self-serving lot

I signed when the e-petition came out , then they changed the rules about being a Brighton resident. I'm not, but only live a few miles away. seems they are "fixing" the figures and diisregarding anyone who is not a their council tax payer

JosieByCoast Report 13 Jan 2010 21:41

Like you Jill I only live a few miles away so I can't be included, but I have got my mother-in-law who lives in Brighton to sign. Thats why I'm asking folk to approach anyone they know who lives there and ask them to sign it.
1182 now

I know that this is not the place to get political but I am a Lib Dem councillor in another part of the country and so I thought I would contact the local Lib Dem councillors in Brighton & Hove. I have e-mailed Paul Elgood, Lib Dem Group Leader about this issue but then looked at his blog and you might be interested in seeing what he has to say:

http://www.brunswickblog.blogspot.com/

I have asked him why only residents / workers can be accepted as signing the petition - will let you know what response I get. People may wish to contact him directly

When I registered last evening, I wasn't asked if I was a Brighton & Hove resident before I signed the petition.

JosieByCoast Report 14 Jan 2010 10:02

My mother-in-law hasn't been asked yet either, but the rules for the petition say you must live or work in Brighton. I know of 3 people who signed and about a week later they were contacted and asked where they lived.

I'm not a resident, so can't sign, but I'll give this a nudge because the History Centre hildings enabled us to answer quite a few family history questions.

Just seen on another site that the centre has been saved.
The council have had a re think, largely due to public opposition.

Well done all you who bothered to sign.

JosieByCoast Report 15 Jan 2010 11:58

Just had an email forwarded to me from the Federation of Family History Societies saying the council have put a press release on its site, part of it says "I envisage keeping the History Centre where it is until The Keep opens".
The Keep is a new building that is hoped to be built at Falmer in 2 years time, although Lib Dems think it is more likely to be 5 years.

If you want to read the press release go to
www[.]brighton-hove[.]gov[.]uk
remove the brackets
then on the top banner click on news
then click latest press releases
then on the right hand menu click on no cutbacks to History Centres

Many thanks to all who signed or got folk to sign
