Portsea, Hampshire GOATER lookup

UPDATED

Received birth cert for Charlotte yesterday - mother Cecilia formerly Hunt, father William Henry, locksmith.

Still leaves the mystery of why she used Ann on 1861 census - maybe enumerator was hard of hearing or Ann was her everyday name and Cecilia was only used on Sundays.

Best wishes

Yes, I realised that if it was your William it would make him 15. Not the norm I would have thought, although one of my ancestors married in 1835 at aged 15.

Hi Alison

Yes we did - thanks again for all the help.

Yes I realise this William is another person - part of my "extended" Goater family.

Thanks guys for all your input on this. I am waiting for cert to confirm if William's wife is Ann/ Cecilia/ one and the same. Will update when it lands.

Re the marriage of William to Ann Francis - he would only have been 15 - not sure if marriage that early was the norm?

Thanks for all the interest, much appreciated.

Best wishes

Hi Miriam

I did some research for you in 2007 where we thought that your William Goater was baptised 24 Feb 1828 Sparsholt, son of William, labourer and Rebecca.
William's father, William Goater, widower, had married Rebecca Miles, also a widow in 1827 in Sparsholt.
He was married initially to Elizabeth Sims in 1813 and Elizabeth died in 1823. They had a bunch of children.
The information came from the knightroots website for Hampshire.

When William remarried Rebecca they seemed to have the one child, William, as seen in the 1841 census (under Goates - where William is at home aged 13 with parents William and Rebecca).

It seemed to all fit as we figured out the Brewer link also on his son's death certificate.

The other William Goater born Portsea would seem to be another person.

Alison

the children to both Ann and cecilia are the same if you check the names and ages, I would say its a good chance they are the same family and maybe William called her Ann rather than Cecilia OR maybe the eneumerator made a mistake with his record .I have census where names differ but its the same family .

Thanks to everyone for input. As far as I can tell there are 2 Williams - one married to Ann (1861 census) and one married to Cecilia - both seem to be locksmiths.

Further to Shirley's suggestion I have ordered birth cert for Charlotte which should give me Ann's surname. Then i can attempt to find marriage and hopefully parent's details.

Best wishes

Miriam Report 12 Jan 2010 19:09

Please can anyone help find the parents of William Goater born c.1821 in Portsea, Hampshire.
At the time of the 1861 census he is living with wife Ann and children Charlotte (17), Rebecca (15), Robert (11), Annie (7), George (3) and Henry (1) in Clerkenwell, Middlesex. Also 2 lodgers; the Fowler sisters. His occupation is listed as patent locksmith. Rebecca and Robert were born in Wolverhampton and the rest of the children in Lambeth and Clerkenwell.

Any tips on the way forward gratefully received.
