Have you found her on the census?

If you have her marriage cert what was her father's name?

Do you mean you will have to order the marriage cert as you said birth cert.

I meant the marriage certificate, I was out last night :-). It's her birth I'm trying to find. x

ChristineinPortugal

ChristineinPortugal Report 20 Dec 2009 15:18

Thought you must mean that.

The only Edith Blacklock I can find in1891, 1901 and 1911 was born 1888.

Thanks Christine, I've found those, but it's going against all the information that I have got.

I'll order the marriage certificate, and work things out that way.

Thanks for your help

Hi Joanne

Re d-o-b on the death cert. This may not be correct as the person who registered the death may not have known the exact date of birth and could have been out by a couple of years.

You say she was born in Newcastle but you can't be sure of that without a birth certificate. Perhaps she was born in Scotland. Her middle name sounds a bit Scottish to me and children in Scotland are often given their mother's maiden name as a middle name. It might be worth checking on Scotlandspeople.

I don't know if this mob has any relevance:

Clearly Joanne's got the actual d.cert, but the GRO index gives the same dob=16/2/1891, and this doesn't fit well with a quarter 3 rego - I can see the year being off, but the actual birthday is quite unusual.

My grandfather always celebrated his birthday on Christmas Day ................ the family had to visit, etc etc

it was not until after he died in 1963 that my uncle found (or obtained) grandfather's birth certificate that we discovered he had actually been born on January 9 1885 not December 25 1884.

In his case, we had always believed a wrong year and date!

Granted only 2 weeks

Interestingly, I have his WW1 records .......... no date of birth that I can see, but he declares his age as 30 years 350 days ............... on December 11 1915. Which implies December 26 was his birthday!

I have looked at the 1891 census of the family (or so I beliveved), which lists Edith as Elizabeth the North East dialect can be quite broad so I could understand the incorrect name, but as I have her death certificate and can identify her marriage, it still makes me think her name was Edith, especially as my mum was 'supposed' to be named after her.

I'm going roudn in circles with this one, think the only way to make sure is to pay for the marriage cert and see what paretn info this gives.

Anyone any other ideas?

Getting her marriage cert is a good idea. Apart from her fathers name and occupation the witnesses might be a help

Hway hinny - I'm wondering if Edith was misread as Elizth by the enumerator - it's hard to write with a geordie accent.
