Wow thanks everyone,

The Foley family is a large one at that. John and Ellen hail from Ireland and were married in Whitechapel in 1855. Their first child was Michael born in 1856, followed by Mary in 1859 the Johanna in about 1866, Patrick from whom I decend 1869, twins James and Jeremiah 1872, another set of twins John and Silvester 1876 and lastly Ellen in 1879.

The first time I came across Edward was on the 1891 census with his grandfather, Aunt Annie and Uncle's Silvester and John.

I'm guessing that Annie is in fact Johanna as I've not found a sutiable matching Annie in BMD.

Then on the 1901 census he is still with his grandfather. Aged about 20. I will definately consider those that have been suggested like Edwin, though the mother's name still doesn't appear to match.

So he was definately born circa 1880, though proably not where he states on the census.

He might just have to stay on the fringes for now and I'll come back to him.

Thanks again everyone for your hard work and sore eyes on this one. I think it's time for a cuppa, my family is starting to give me a headache.

Rose how did you find Mary Ann Barnett as she is missing from the page of transcribed marriages?
Thanks
Julie

May is born the same year as Mary in 1871.

Edwin looks to be a bit of a naughty boy. He marries Priscilla Webber in 1872 and Mary Ann Barnett in 1887. I don't see a death for either and he lists himself as single in 1901:

If it is the same family there are 2 possibilities
for daughter's bearing Edward but then why not just call him Foley? He could have been easily absorbed into a family with so many children!

Don't completely disregard Edwin. I have two instances of Edwards being interchanged with Edwin one born Edwin became Edward and then changed back again and the other did the opposite!

Gypsy Joe
Don't forget that GRO were looking for surname Brownlow and mother's maiden name Foley.
Tthey were not looking for an Edward with mother's name Foley so Christine's suggestion might be relevant.
Do you have the family in 1871? I couldn't locate them and was looking to see if there was another daughter who might be Edward's mother?

Christine

Thinking about it, the Edward you suggeseted wont be him otherwise the mother's name would have come up as Foley.

I'll guess I'll leave him for now.

Thanks again all.

Ahh the joys of finding family.

Von - I've not tried Ancestry as I don't have membership to them.

Polly the Foley family in the 1891 and 1901 census's are the ones I too have found and are correct for my family although in the 1891 census it's Ellen Foley not Collen and John and Sylvester are actually twins. That's how I found this family.

Christine I'll try that one from St George in the East next. Thankyou

Steven from Oz - The name is definately Edward so I don't think he is the one but thank you.

Quinsgran since I don't know anything about young Edward I've not looked for anything else. I'm not a direct descendant but I do want to know through who he is connected.

Thanks everyone anyway, I'll keep at it and not re-order this certificate that I had ordered for the one in C London.

Hi Gypsy Joe, I think I have found Edward's baptism.

Name: Edwin Brownlow
Record Type: Baptism

Father's Name: Henry William Warrick Brownlow
Mother's Name: Anne Brownlow

His registration:

BROWNLOW Edwin William Whitechapel 1c 302

I have found William's marriage certificate that his wife was Ann Mead. So she was a widow. Her father was Robert Markham. I think it was not them?

Have you checked Ancestry to see if there was a baptism?
Personally I would try and find out more about him before I got the certificate.
Good Luck with the search

Hi Choccy and Christine the one for C London was the one I tried, but they came back and said mothers surname not Foley.

Christine the census you found for Edward Brownlow is interesting since I also found the one of the census for John Foley. I know John Foley is the right family for me because of the other people in the household.

John Foley did have a daughter called Annie but according to the census she was single, unless this is a error on the enumorators part but then why when I ordered the birth certificate did they say the mother's surname was not Foley unless this is of course a second marriage for her.

Annie or Ann/e Foley was born c1867 in Whitechapel.
