Irritated by people copying rubbish

I sent for a couple of English certs last night (morning for you). I think the d cert is the right one for my gt gt grandmother, age and place are right. I am hoping informant might be a daughter or a son in law.

I am not too sure about the b cert. It is the right name for my grandmothers older brother and the right district. Only problem is that it is in the first quarter of 1868 and I had understood he wasnt b until late that year ( I even have a date for it somewhere) in Philadelphia, USA. Since his parents married on July the previous year I am wondering if the bride was already pregnant and he was b a year earlier than family knowledge has him b to hide her 'shame'. Only thing is, how was he reg. in England if the family were in USA within 2 weeks of the wedding. Unless the bride returned to England on her own and hid away from relatives, only returning to USA and her husband after the birth. Hmmm. Have to wait for the cert to possibly confirm my suspicions.

Huia.

I remember looking at your strange tree (well not yours...lol)

I am still determined not to contact these people. I have previously corrected some where I have census and certs and it was their choice whether to amend their tree.

If they have disconnected family members of my family I am still clueless as to why!

To everyone else good luck with 'proper' research :-)

Hi
I understand how you feel, I go to all the expense of subscribing to Genes and Ancestry, Spend pounds on certificates and travelling to Record's Offices and years now on putting my tree together and people just say can I see your tree no please even. So now i don't let anyone view it on Genes and I keep it private(I hope) on Ancestry.
Love Norma xx

No, Beejay, I decided it might as well stay there as a monument to the nastiness of the creator. After all, who would be copying it? The names were all slightly different from real ones and the only people who would look would most likely be people who were told by me about it.

Huia, morning. Did you ever get that very offensive tree removed from Ancestry or is it still there?

Huia Report 4 Sep 2009 06:22

I have an even worse problem which I have aired on these boards before. My sister is in a lot of trees m to a man b in 1723, even though many of them had our father correctly named with his correct y.o.b. of 1899. Simple mathematics would have told the people they were wrong. When I sent messages to many of the people, some ignored my message, others replied that my email was very rude (pointing out their error?). Only a few corrected it. The only problem with leaving them happily thinking their tree is marvellous is that others copy it and the error is perpetuated. It irritates me greatly.

I did add postems to quite a few trees. I also noticed that many of the tree owners claim to have a degree. They dont say what it is a degree in, I can only conclude it is in idiocy.

I think some people build their trees using the IGI !!

Sue Report 31 Aug 2009 12:14

Thanks for your replies.

I have obviously slept on this and having looked again at these trees the owners are not even related to either my cousin or myself or anyone else remotely connected to either of our direct lines. They have NO sources attached to the names, if they had taken the trouble to look at just one census the glaring errors would have poked them in the eye so.............

I will still let them get on with it :-))

well, I do declare .............................

adding a "Comment" to a tree on ancestry may work

Someone added my gt aunt's husband to his tree on ancestry ........

both had initials J W, both were born in Lancashire, both died in New Jersey, USA

BUT he neglected to notice that his JW was born in the 18th century and was dead by 1823

While my JW wasn't born until about 1875

He also took my great grandparents as JW's in-laws .... they were both born around 1845, so also after his JW had died

I added comments to the gt grandparents saying these could not possibly be related to the JW in "this tree" as they were born almost 100 years later

I can't find that tree now!

so he must have removed the names!

Absolutely, Sue, you carry on :-)

If people are really interested in family history research as a genuine hobby, they would want to follow the detective trail for their own satisfaction.

I have had the same problem, I even offered to help the person to sort out the correct Grt Grt Grandparents but to no avali, I take a lot of time & trouble to make sure my info is right, if I am not sure I don't put it on my tree. I have just had a look at the tree in question & all the wrong info is still there

Meercat,

The names have disappeared from the tree but are still in the Ancestry Index which will get rebuilt at some time. Not sure how often this is done though.

I remember seeing links to my old tree last year for a while after I had deleted it and uploaded a new one.

I've attached a note to G G Granny says that I will be happy to send them a copy of a very old photo of her once they have her parents correct.

Sue

Sue Report 30 Aug 2009 17:11

My gt. grandmother appears on 3 Ancestry trees with the wrong parents. All her siblings have been allocated to the wrong parents too.

I am really irritated because it looks as though these have just been copied from each other.

My tree and my cousins tree that show the correct details are both private.

I could be really nice and tell them but to be honest I don't want to.
If they can't be bothered to do any actual research (or at least basic checking) they can carry on in their delusional worlds.

Am I being really nasty?

Sue
