Wow, thanks so much Heather and Ann. Lots of leads for me to follow up. Heather, you could be correct with him having a regular job and selling beer on the side - in the 1881 census he is shown as an iron roll turner and beer seller. Though in 1891 he is a publican, but perhaps he is exaggerating. I didn't realise that selling beer could be a sideline - perhaps helping to make ends meet. Humphrey was originally from High Bullen in Wednesbury, which seems to be a very high density, poor and polluted area.
Thanks again for all your help.

It may not have been a pub as we know it, but just a beer house - in that he had a regular job but brewed/sold beer aswell, it was a pretty common thing to do.
You could always try the local records office to see if he applied for a licence? Ditto whether a pub ever existed at that address. (you can look at the census images to check if a named pub was near by)

I am interested in Humphrey Foster, who was born c1814 in Wednesbury, Staffordshire. He is in the 1871 census at 50 Coppice, Tipton as a inn keeper. In the 1881 census he is at the same address as an iron roll turner and beer seller. In the 1891 census he is still at the same address as a publican. He died March qtr 1893.
I am interested in finding out about the pub that he ran. Does anyone know if there was a pub at 50 Coppice, Tipton, or one nearby? Any ideas how I could find out?
Also, do you think he could possibly have had an obituary, and if so, where would I start looking for it?
Thanks for any help.
