What was a Scavenger on Vestry please?

One of mine was a vestry labourer. I think vestry is the old term for an area - around the parish church, the old parish boundary maybe. I did try reading up on it once and it is very confusing. Be interested to see if there is someone out there who can explain it to both of us! |
