Dear SHRat
Oh Thank you so much this must be him, so much for family stories - perhaps the other story was abit more dramatic !!
No mention was ever made of 3 other siblings (even when Jesiie & Winifred died intestate they didn't show on the family tree !!) I will search and see if I can find deaths for them.
Thanks again for you prompt help - now to start again on the other side of husbands family.

Thanks you guys - still baffled how you come up with answers so quickly !! It takes me hours (literally ) to look up and find correct entries.
I get so bored looking for one person I keep swapping to different family members.
My husbands family are almost a complete mystery - at least I am off work for the next 6 weeks of school hols so have plenty of time to waste !!

I have looked on the Cwgc site now for a John Bass, betwen 1914 and 1916, but nothing comes up with any clue linking to your John Bass.

Lynn for your info here is the link to the CWGC site

Checking again on the 1911 census, using Lilian Jane bass as reference........ Lilian born 1909 and Henry still come up with them, and they come up as son and daughter!!???

I think the only way to know for sure would be to look at the census return itself. Here's the Url;

Hi Lynn,

The only 100% positive way to find out would be to buy Winifreds birth cert........ however seeing that these names come up with Jessie on a free search we know that 2 off the children are correct and the parents marriage Bass and Lacy tie in.

I'll see what I can find out about Lilian and Henry.

Hi Dee
How do I know which relates to 'my family' - or are you saying they all lived at one address ? - never heard mention of siblings called Henry or Lilian
Also the marriage records don't quite tie in - or is it me being dense ;)

Hi George
Not sure what CWGC site is ! but he was probably born in the North East prob around Tynemouth that is where children's births were registered
First name could be John as this passed down to other generations but just a guess.
Not much help I'm afraid.

Lynn

have you actually checked the records on the CWGC site as there are 124 deaths associated with the Bass name 1914 to 1916.

Have you got a place of birth which may help to find him, or tell us where he lived

Lynn Report 6 Aug 2009 15:46

Can anyone point me in the right direction please.
It has always been said that my husbands great grandfather died at the beginning of WW1 before reaching the front line as he drank contaminated water. I have looked on WW1 deaths by surname but nothing appears. Also looked for deaths around area he lived. Could it be possible he was sent to a military hospital where he subsequently died, so area could be anywhere!!
Only info I have is surname of BASS born circa 1880, wifes maiden name Lacey, and he had 3 children born 1904, 1911 & 1913.
Any help would be much appreciated to solve yet another mystery.
Lynn
