I would welcome any opinions on the purchasing of geneology cd's - if anyone has any thoughts i.e how accurate they are? - the amount of info on them and is this more than can be found by doing the groundwork on census' etc? I would be grateful if you would please post them to this thread

I would also welcome any opinions on prices or where to order them from. I havent got a fortune to spend, but I do have ancestors in i.e. Northamptonshire who I would like to find out more about and not only will I not have to time to visit anytime soon, but the cost of getting there is alot more than I thought. The purchase of a cd for this area may be easier and more cost effective for me.

Thank you in anticipation!

How long is a piece of string.

It depends what information you are looking for and the area of the country where you expect to find it.

Without further details of what and where you are looking for it's impossible to answer your question without typing out a story.

If you are looking for specific information in Nottinghamshire that is not on the census's then contact the Nottingham Family History Society, they have a very good online shop with lots of local CD's specific to that area, here's a link

can you tell me - when you click onto the parishes that have been transcribed - what do the numbers mean

1564_11_12 to 1641_06_15 107 records
1653_05_12 to 1901_02_27 458 records

It depends what CD's you want to buy as to who stocks and sells them, some Parish Registers / Bishops Transcripts come from small churches / villages etc. and there may not be a lot on the CD so they not of commercial interest to the larger CD sellers, that's why I said go to the society shop

As for the refernce numbers you ask about, where are you seeing those reference number, different records have different meanings for their reference numbers.

Parish Chest don't actually produce or stock any of the items they sell, they are agents selling the items on their site for a commision on behalf of the supplier, they don't have a clue what's on the CD unless the seller has given them the details of it to add to the product description, they do not stock the items on their site, if you ask them about a specific item they have to e-mail the supplier and ask for that info. If you buy anthing from them they e-mail the supplier the order details and the supplier ships out the goods direct to the customer, that's why I referred you to the Nottinham FHS site and shop. The original supplier may or may not have a website where they can sell their wares so they use Parish Chest as an outlet

Elaine - It's the range of dates covered, and the # of records transcribed.

Ron,

I was thinking that if I joined the Society - then I may be able to access more info via their website?

Do you think that the website info will be the same as on cd's they sell?
