After years of research, I now feel that it is more likely to be the modern parents who name their first son after the father - in case there are no more sons! In past generations,when families were large, they knew there would probably be more at some time or another, so they didn't seem to be in a hurry to name the first one after the father, and very often favoured a grandfather instead. |

Trying to find the parents of Samuel Timmins, born 1814 in Sedgley parish Staffordshire. The LDS site lists a Samuel born in 1814 to Thomas Timmins and Mary. The problem I have choosing this Samuel is that neither Samuel nor his sons nor grandsons named any of their boys Thomas. He did name his oldest daughter Mary, however. He did have a Joshua and a Benjamin and his grandsons also had Joshuas and Benjamins. The Timmins families that I am sure of seem to |
