BIG THANKS TO EVERYONE FOR ALL THE MESSAGES

Just a couple of answers to the questions asked, Gay is definitely Emily French's maiden name.

All the children apart from Elmin? Louise and Elizabeth, we think all died prior to 1911

Many Thanks xx

I favour the birth for Elizabeth Lilian as she was the only Elizabeth French registered in that time frame in Marylebone.

There are no Elmin or Emlyn French's registered or such like. You have not said whether the person was male or female.
There's an Edwin reg Mar 1902 Kensington?

The 1911 census should tell you how long they have been married, in genral its a good guide when trying to find missing children to assume they will be born after the marriage (sometimes show up in the same year and quarter as the marriage though!).

In some cases couples did get married after children were born or not at all.

I've looked on freebmd for a marriage that matches and it can't seem to find any.

Edit: Elizabeth seems to be missing in 1891, as she's on the 1901 census I guess she's in another household, probably a relations somewhere, if its the right family this may help expand your tree.

You might get this showing twice, not sure what happened to the first one, thank you so much for the tips on the other sites, have now found out more about my great grandad.

As long as it is OK, I will post the details I have found so far and what we know about the ones that we can't, we have searched and searched!!

The childrens mum and dad are Charles French and Emily French (nee Gay), they had eighteen children and only six were remaining in 1911 when the census was done, we think we know the ones that were still alive at that time.

We have found births and deaths for Marie May (born 1906 West Ham), William (born 1889 Marylebone) and Charlie (born 1887 Marylebone)

Still missing birth/death details for the following:

Elmin - was 9 in 1911 (born Notting Hill)
Elibezbeth (this is the spelling on the actual census record) was 11 in 1911 (born Notting Hill)
Louise - was 3 in 1911 (born East Ham)
Elizabeth - was 14 in 1901 (born Marylebone)

The other names are Percy, Michael (Mick) and James (Jim) - we only think that they were born before 1911

Hope this helps???

Many thanks for all your help xx

Thanks everyone for your help, it is much appreciated. I am currently trying to do my family tree with my daughter and we are not doing too bad, the census is a great help, just wish the 1881 was available as this is the one that would be really helpful trying to locate the other children.

We have found the births and deaths of three of the children and know the names of the other three that were still alive in 1911 - although cannot find their births anywhere. We have four other names, but the other eight children we do not have any idea of their names, and looking at the census where the other ones were born it varies from Marylebone, Notting Hill and East Ham. I just wish there was a register for mum's and listed all the children that they gave birth to - it would make it so much easier - but hey it is a challenge!

Thanks again

And don't rule out the possibility of church records.

i was lucky recently, I contacted online the church where some of my family were married/christened etc, just a general query as to what records they held. Had an email back from their archivist with a marriage and births...including one I had no idea of , between census, would have been my gt uncle, his christening and his death aged three which did not show anywhere else.

PME Report 5 Jul 2009 10:16

I'd start with the 1901 census as it would be bad luck if all the missing children were born and died between the census's, this might bring up a few names.

Then I'd do what Jim suggested.

Do you know if the surviving children were christened, if so christenign records are another route you can investigate.

If it's an uncommon surname and they stayed in the same village, it might be possible to guess. Look at when the surviving children were born and try to figure out when the others would fit in.

What are the details so we can take a look?
