Mgtjwl - just seen your post of 25/6/09 15:03

So taking an arbitary marr from an arbitary church, I get:

http://www.lan-opc.org.uk/Liverpool/Liverpool-Central/stnicholas/index.html
Marriages at Our Lady and St Nicholas with St Anne in the Parish of Liverpool
The Following marriages are extracted from the Bishop's Transcripts, LDS Films 1068889 and 1068891.

Marriage: 17 Feb 1833 St Nicholas, Liverpool, Lancashire, England
John Barr - Blacksmith
Ann Parry - Spinster
Married by: C. Wray, Curate
Register: Marriages 1833, Page 3, Entry 100
Source: LDS Film 1068891

If I now do a film # search in the LDS FHL catalog for 1068891 and drill down I get:

Title Bishop's transcripts for St. Nicholas' Church, Liverpool, 1604-1867
Authors Church of England. St. Nicholas' Church (Liverpool, Lancashire) (Main Author)
Church of England. St. Peter's Church (Liverpool, Lancashire) (Added Author)
Notes Microfilm of original records at the Lancashire Record Office, Preston.
Text in Latin and English
Subjects England, Lancashire, Liverpool - Church records *************

Note Location Film
Baptisms, marriages and burials, 1604-1641, 1663-1778; baptisms, marriages and burials 1704-1708. FHL BRITISH Film 1068887
Baptisms, marriages and burials, 1779-1798. FHL BRITISH Film 1068888
Baptisms, marriages and burials, 1799-1812. FHL BRITISH Film 1068889
Baptisms, marriages and burials, 1813-1823. FHL BRITISH Film 1068890
Baptisms, marriages and burials, 1824-1838. FHL BRITISH Film 1068891
Baptisms, 1839-1867, marriages, 1839 and burials, 1840-1854. FHL BRITISH Film 1068892 Items 1 - 3

So these records aren't the original parish records (which are at Liverpool RO), but the contemporary back-up copy the church made which are now at Lancs RO in Preston. The films would show the handwritten transcripts. Although there are no online transcripts for this diocese, there are for Durham, so one could look for marrs in say, Newcastle St Nicholas on 17/2/1833.
http://pilot.familysearch.org/recordsearch/start.html#p=allCollections;r=1

Drill down thru Durham BTs, Northumberland, Necastle upon Tyne, "Durham" St Nicholas 1823-1855 and then go to image 312 of 683.
There were no marrs on this date - the next was Jonathon Forster of Ovingham & Sarah Charlton on 21/2/1833. Oddly, this marr has only one witness, who looks like a constant stand-in - he's on 5 of the 6 marrs on this image.

Anyway, where are the OPRs - if we click on the link I ***'ed we can drill down to get to:

Title Parish registers for St. Nicholas' Church, Liverpool, 1659-1948
Authors Church of England. St. Nicholas' Church (Liverpool, Lancashire) (Main Author)
Notes Microfilm of original manuscripts located at the parish church in Liverpool and at the Liverpool Record Office.
Some registers contain a name index.
St. Nicholas' Church is located on Chapel Street in Liverpool.
Liverpool Record Office no.: 283 NIC 1/1-9, 2/1-7, 3/1-6, 9-105, 4/1-4, 7A/1-7, 7B/1-61, 7C/1-2, 9/1, 10/1.

Note Location Film
Marriages, 1829-1834. (Includes index to grooms.) FHL BRITISH Film 93842
etc.

As the notes say, these are images of the original register pages.

BrinsleyS - In May, I put a post(s) on:

Tips Board: I. G. I. TUTORIAL
http://www.genesreunited.co.uk/boards.asp?wci=thread&tk=1150553

Here's the relevant bit:

Back on the IGI search screen, we can click on "Library" in the blue bar at top, then library catalog, and do a "place search" for "Gawsworth".
Drilling down, we get:

Topic England, Cheshire, Gawsworth - Church records

Titles Bishop's transcripts for Gawsworth, 1586-1868 Church of England. Parish Church of Gawsworth (Cheshire)
[Bishop's Transcripts were the church's back-up records]
The manor of Gawsworth, Cheshire Richards, Raymond
[A book, which includes abstracts from parish registers & other town records including churchwardens' and constables' accounts, poor law records, etc]
Marriages at Gawsworth, 1557-1812 Church of England. Parish Church of Gawsworth (Cheshire)
[In Phillimore's index]
Marriages, 1588-1812, Gawsworth, Cheshire, England Church of England. Parish Church of Gawsworth (Cheshire)
[Forms part of the Norman Collection compiled by Bertram William Tuff Norman]
Parish chest material, 1778-1870 Gawsworth (Cheshire)
[Churchwardens' accounts, 1833-1870 Constables' accounts, 1778-1836 from CRO]
Parish of St. James, Gawsworth, County of Cheshire, U.K. (Macclesfield Hundred), burials, 1557-1997 Taylor, Betty
[Non-circulating extract by NCFHS of Dickenson]
Parish registers for Gawsworth, 1557-1993 Church of England. Parish Church of Gawsworth (Cheshire)
[Click on this]
The registers of the parish church of Gawsworth in the county of Chester, 1557-1837 Dickinson, Robert
[The book extracted to p009421]

So there's a range of stuff there - some are later, even modern, transcripts published in book(let) form;
some - e.g., Pallott's - are old index entries; the bishop's transcripts will be contemporaneous hand written transcripts;
and some are the original parish records - e.g. the item labelled "[Click on this]"

If we do click on it, we get to see:

Title Parish registers for Gawsworth, 1557-1993
Authors Church of England. Parish Church of Gawsworth (Cheshire) (Main Author)
Notes Microfilm of original records in the Cheshire Record Office, Chester, England.
Cheshire Record Office no.: P193/4467/1-8, 13, P193/5583.

and clicking on the "view film notes" button at top right gets:

Note Location Film
Baptisms, 1557-1706; marriages, 1557-1711; burials, 1557-1692 (baptisms missing years 1667-1673) Baptisms, 1706-1774; marriages, 1711-1754; burials, 1692-1775 Baptisms, burials, 1775-1812; Baptisms, 1813-1885; Marriages, 1754-1837. FHL BRITISH Film 1999985
Marriages, 1837-1958; Burials, 1813-1860. FHL BRITISH Film 2000007 Items 1 - 3
Burials, 1860-1993. FHL BRITISH Film 2147232 Item 4

If one ordered FHL films 2000007 or 2147232, they'ld have images of the original Gawsworth parish registers.

When you order a film, most (all?) LDS FHCs will want to know the film # to order, and if you've looked them up as above, you'll already know what you're ordering.

Thaks Margaret, that helps a lot. I must get round to ordering the ones I need someday soon.

We spent a day in Dublin a few years ago looking at marriage records for my wife's great grandad, so I can sympathise with Marcelle.....!

http://www.lan-opc.org.uk/indexp.html has many transcriptions, some from Liverpool churches - here's one from Toxteth:

Marriage: 19 Feb 1835 St Patrick, Liverpool, Lancashire, England
Martin O'Hara -
Sarah McCann -
Witness: Mary Keeffe; Louis Marchese
Register: Marriages 1827 - 1848, Page 68, Entry 1
Source: LDS Film 396378

I note Louis Marchese is a witness on many marriages - probably he worked or volunteered in the church.

If you want to see some original images, on the IGI page click on Search Records - Record search pilot in the blue bar at top. From there you can drill down to the Durham bishop's transcripts and browse some images.

Julia,

Not sure reading you last post if you have fully understood. You will not be able to obtain a certificate of any sort before 1837. They simply did not exist.

What you can get, if you are lucky, is the detail which was recorded in the parish register, if you can see a copy of the original image then brilliant (Marcelle's post), otherwise you may need to settle for a transcript. Some originals simply no longer exist and transcripts are the closest you are likely to get.

Marcelle

Marcelle Report 25 Jun 2009 18:10

I have some copies that a fellow researcher emailed me and they were the originals. Quite hard to read. I think she went to the local Mormon centre and got them.

InspectorGreenPen

InspectorGreenPen Report 25 Jun 2009 18:07

I was thinking of ordering a couple of films from the IGI for parishes that have not been on their site as yet.

Does anyone know, from personal experience - as opposed to supposition - if the microfilms are images of the original parish records, or just a transcript?

Julia

Julia Report 25 Jun 2009 18:05

Many thanks Marcelle, I have been in touch with the Peterborough Archivist before, so will e-mail them tomorrow. Its funny, until I saw this post, I had never thought about getting the certificates, so it has jogged my mind. Off to do the dinner now.
Many thanks again

I am not familiar with this area so I googled St John the Baptist Peterborough and came up with

http://www.peterborough.gov.uk/page-5875

Sometimes by googling you may hit lucky and that area might be being transcribed by volunteers and be online. I currently transcribe for Ilminster & Chew Stoke

If not email the local records office or library for info on where to find what you need. They are usually very helpful

Good Luck

Hi Julia

No can't get a cert from the GRO for that date. You may be able to get a copy from the parish registers. What part of the country is it?

1837 onwards for certificates

Julia

Julia Report 25 Jun 2009 17:44

Following on from this query, but of a similar vein, may I ask the following.
I too found a marriage on the IGI site for 1739. Am I right or wrong in thinking that certificates this early cannot be sent for from the local Register of BMD's for the relavent area. In other words were certificates available at that time.
Many thanks
