I have obtained a marriage cert. and the following details match with the person I hope it is:-
Brides name ...................Jane Mawdsley
Her fathers name............James Mawdsley
Fathers occupation.......Engine man, a little boasting I think.
Place of birth, Wigan according to the 1881 census, .....I need Kirkby
Date of birth............... 1857, I need 1853ish
Witness one seems to be her employer, John Occleshaw as she is living at his address in the 1881 census and on the marriage cert.
Witness two, could be the grooms sister, Jane Taylor
In the 1891 census a Jane Taylor born 1852 is recorded as a widow and sister in law in the household of George Massie, in Bootle.
Are there too many "no`s and not enough "yes`s" to make this cert "mine". Please don`t shout your replies to me as I do feel a little delicate today an feel like I need a little TLC lol

So Jane is 4 years younger than you expected her to be? How old is the groom? she may have dropped a few years so as not to appear older than him.

Thanks for that diddydoris.
I do have that info, but your interest is very much appreciated.
I just had an inspirational idea !!!!!!!!! My Jane was a servant in the 1871 census in her home town of Kirkby, so I did a 10 year marriage cert on freeBMD, that is 1872-1881, using the names Jane Mawdesley and William Taylor in the Lancashire area, and only one was found and that is the cert I have.
Did "ladies" lie about their age in them days?
Did people embroider their family occupations?
As for the 1881 census, I think the enumerator just bunched her place of birth with the head of the household.
I feel a little happier now.

Hello Nikkidown south
On the marriage cert they both give their ages as 24.
I do have proof that "my" Jane was born in 1853, and the age on the marriage cert would have had them both being born in 1857.
I suppose that a girl who had been in service all her life would jump at any chance to "grab a man", even if that meant telling pokies about her age.
If ony they had known the headaches us decendents would have trying to piece together bits of info, made more difficult by them trying to appear younger.
Never mind, what else would I be doing if I was not sat here pulling my hair out........Housework, ironing, walking the dos, etc etc etc.

Hi Following on from my previous post I have found this on ancestry Jane Mawdsley Year of Registration: 1853 Quarter of Registration: Jul-Aug-Sep District: West Derby County: Lancashire Volume: 8b Page: 314
Kirkby By Melling would possibly have come under the district of West Derby, as it covered a very large area.
Regards

Yes kathlyn ,unfortunatly they did tell an awful lot of Porkies, ........I`m sure they did it to wind us up years later....lol not to mention that every minister/vicar wasn`t meticulous about the information, half the time i think they just wrote down what they THOUGHT they`d heard them say.....!!!
I`m one ahead of you I`ve already walked the dog, and done some housework, now i`m just going to ignore that BIG pile of ironing {As I have been all day] coz this is much more fun......
