My husband's G Grandfather is called Robert Wilkie and in the 1871 and 1881 census he is shown living with his mother Joan (sometimes spelt Johann) and his brother George who wass born in 1864 in Gateshead. |

I'd be inclined to trawl up and down the neighbouring roads as Jill has suggested, but I would be looking for someone with the surname Stafford, as this was often how the father of an illegitimate child was "mentioned" - by giving the child the father's surname as a second forename. |

Thanks for the suggestions - will go looking for staffords in the 1861 and 71 census. Will give me something to do next week while I am off on holiday :-) |
