i have just found an ancestor in the 1881 census and it says he was a prisoner in majesty's prison warwick. is there any way i can find out what he had done and why he was in prison? |

Try the local paper - my gg uncle was in a Manchester prison in 1881, the sentence was reported in the Manchester Times - he had " stolen £90 from a lad in Picadilly" - and it wasn't his first offence either! |
