Eliza Field (she married William Welling - have never found the marriage so that is a presumption) who in the 1861 Greenwich Workhouse census says she was born in Watford, Essex. She is with 2 children Martha and Stephen Welling. I have found a birth of Eliza Field in St Peters, St Albans, Herts in 1829 - Mother Mary. I have googled and Watford, Herts is just 21 miles from St Albans. So could be a strong possibility. I have never found Eliza or William Welling on any other census returns. They were Hawkers and their sons Stephen and Daniel were too in later life. I have found Stephen in the 1881 census with wife Ann in Deptford (Ann died in 1884) and in 1901 & 1911 still in Deptford with 2nd wife Rose. I have Daniels marriage cert and he married a Susan Playfoot. Martha was born 1853 in Deptford, Daniel 1857 in Tower Hill and Stephen 1860 in Greenwich. So was Watford ever in Essex? Can anyone find my Wellings in any other census? Could Daniel have been with William in 1860? There is a William in the workhouse ….. I cannot get any further back with my Fields or Wellings – if anyone has any ideas – I would be so so grateful Hope this is making some sense Thanks Chris
Wellen, welling, willin (various spellings found)
