If I am reading this correctly then I assume that you don't have FTM already, so Margaret's instructions are not quite what you need.

What you need to do is to download your tree from GR. To do this follow the Import / Export instructions at the bottom of the GR page, selecting the export option. GR will then email you a gedcom file which you save on your pc. You then load this into your FTM program.

You can do the same for Ancestry though I gather the file will be transferred directly.

As this now gives you two trees you have to decide what you want to do next. One option is to merge them together. To do this open the first tree and then use the merge option to bring in and merge the second file. Do make sure you keep the original copies as merging is not without its problems, especially if you have not done it before.

Good luck.

Hi Dippy Debbie, I bought it for myself. It is rubbish in my view, but give it a try. You need to first save your tree in the current version of FTM as a GEDCOM file. Go to File, Export File, Entire File and choose "gedcom" as the "save as file type". The Gedcom option is generally at the bottom of the list of file types. Save it to your hard-drive in a suitable folder - mine is called GEDCOMs, and give it a suitable name, e.g. GEDCOM Feb 2nd 2009. Save it also to a CD or memory stick, I prefer the CD. You should be doing this regularly anyway in case of crashes.

Load in the new software, and when you are asked to open a file, use the Gedcom file on your hard-drive and it should load at once.

If you don't like the new software, your gedcom can be loaded back into the old software with no problem.

Hope this helps.

Margaret, the non techy person.
