have checked the 1881 census this is not a royal navy ship (doesn't say hms or royal navy) and as it only has a crew of three it could be anything from a yacht to a barge |

hi, just wondering if anyone can help me, my great grandfather was in the navy during the second world war as a welder, all i know is he was based in scotland at some point during ww2, his name was Leonard Charles Beaumont, is there anyway to find out what ship he was on etc? |

I don't think 'Chief Mate' is a Royal Navy rank, so it won't be a warship. It will probably be in Lloyd's List but I don't know where you'd access that other than the National Archives. |

The RN seem to use the same ship's name over and over again. Once one has been decommissioned it seems to free up that name for re-use. |

Obviously we all know The Beagle as the ship on which Charles Darwin voyaged round the world while he was writing his Origin of Species, but I have found that one of my ancestors was Chief Mate on a ship called Beagle in 1881. Do you think this would be the same ship, or could a number of boats been called the same thing? |
