An idea may be to go to the National Maritime museum website.

I found my master mariner by contacting the local maritime authorities. Happy hunting.

Sometimes the marriages are recorded for the purposes of a naval widow's pension. You might try the National Archives site.

If I've found the correct John and Mary Carr in Toxteth in 1891, then Mary states that she was born 1869 in London

seaham lass,
thank you very much, i have been searching census's for hours and my heads gone fuzzy.
I need to fnd her birth now.
she was married to john carr in 1889 in toxteth liverpool.
i also need to find her in 1881 and 1871 to find her parents.
george knight was a master mariner in 1889 on wedding cert but says he was deceased.

Some more thoughts:
My Master Mariner was from Liverpool too! Try the Merseyside Genealogy and History Forum - it's free and its v. helpful. Loads of info available on anything to do with Liverpool.
Also, google the Liverpool Maritime museum as they can be helpful.
Someone also suggested I tried the Captain's Register at the Guildhall
http://www.history.ac.uk/gh/capintro.
But honestly, the above Merseyside link is great. Happy hunting

What about the witnesses to the marriage?

Rose

sue Report 9 Nov 2008 17:46

the names of the witnesses are hard to read but look like J Bimson and Mary Bimson.

sue Report 9 Nov 2008 19:33

having looked, i think the witnesses were from the carr side of the family and not the knights, i found a marriage for a mary carr to james brimson in 1882 in liverpool.
