ok this is blowing my brain. My mum was adopted at birth. She has her birth certificate that says her mother is Florence but... all the paperwork ive found point it towards being florence sister. If florence name is on the certificate does it mean she is definatly her mother, surely all the files cant be wrong? if so how can I check further who registered her at birth.

thanks

I,m not sure what you mean. the cert will have the informants name on it.ie the person who registerd the birth .

sorry Im no good at explaining. her birth certificate says her mother is florence, the files just say the mothers maiden name, she was told her mother was 16 when she was born but florence was nearly 21 but florences sister was 16? could it be that florence done the paperwork although it was the sister? or that she gave florence name?

Did Florence register the birth? What year was the birth?

Is the birth cert the original? Did Florence adopt her?
Very strange. Was your mother born at home or in a hospital?

Perhaps there is a baptism

Is the mother's first name not mentioned anywhere else in the adoption notes?
Did she sign anything so that a signature could be checked against another one known to be Florence, eg church register at later marriage?

Who registered your mother's birth?

oh... um dont know all mum has is the birth certifictae with florences name on. She was adopted out to a family in the Isle of weight. can we find adoption notes on this genes reunited or is that seperate. Mum was born in February 1946 Jenifer jean Lancey I found the file to say her mothers maiden name was Lancey but no first name. Which would make florence about 20/21 but like I said florence had a sister who was born 1929 making her closer to the age shes been told her mother was.

like I said ...mind blowing

I think when you say you found the file, you mean the birth entry. this will only gives your the Mothers maiden name, not the first name.
Has she not seen her adoption file, and have you looked for a Florence Lancey born 14 years prior to this ?

Your mother can apply to see her adoption file.
This might have vital information.

The birth certificates can be falsified. I have just looked up my cousin's mothers birth. She was fostered from an early age.

I sent for birth certificate, and the mother had given her name with a different spelling. putting an e where a u should be, given a fictious name for husband. which was actually the first two names of two uncles. For her maiden name she had put her own mother's maiden name.

This was in 1918, and it was only going into the census for 1901, and 1891, that I found who her true parents were. They happened to marry in 1919, but left their first daughter with the foster parents.

I suppose in those days to hide the illegitamacy.

I am wondering if the certificate your mother has is just a 'short' certificate. It probably would not show the informants name whereas the 'proper' cert would.

Huia.
"Short version " of English birth certs dont give the names of any parent or who registered the birth. Only the fact of the birth.
I have my mothers original"short version from 1919.I also sent for her full birth cert with all the details

Huia Report 17 Oct 2008 19:46

Yes, Margaret you are right. I have just looked at my m-i-l's short cert.
So now the question is as previous posters asked, who was the informant, that is, who gave the information when the child was registered. Come on Mookins, have a look and tell us. It will be in column 7, 'signature description and residence of informant'.

ok i have mums copy of her certificate and it says in colomn 7 florence lancey.that is also the maiden name of the mother as written in colomn 5.
so as long as she didnt tell porky pies would you all take this as being the mother?

thanks x x x

Battenburg Report 17 Oct 2008 21:41

You would have to assume Florence is the mother.

Who told your mother her mother was only 16?

mookins

mookins Report 17 Oct 2008 22:07

HER ADOPTIVE MOTHER TOLD HER THATS WHAT SHE WAS TOLD AT THE BABY AND MOTHER HOME.
ITS JUST REALLY PLAYING ON MY MIND BEACUSE THE AGE DIFFERENCE OF 1926 FLORENCES BIRTH AND 1929 BARBARAS BIRTH IS QUITE A GAP TO GET WRONG.
WELL IL JUST HAVE TO TAKE LIKE THIS

THANKS EVERYONE REALLY APPRECIATE THIS.
NOW OFF TO LOOK AT DETAILS FOR STILLBIRTHS AS MUM IS SUPPOSEDLY A TWIN TOO!!

Their is not a register that you can search for Stillbirths, the still birth register only began On 1st July 1927 so any Stillbirths befor that date were not registed, for info look at this web page

But what first name is given in column 5 for the mother?
It could be the younger sister had the baby but the older sister registered it. Not that it makes a great deal of difference as it will still be the same blood line.
