A place called Leasome, Lancs or thereabouts?

Can anyone tell me if they have heard of a place called Leasome, Bucky?
I have today received a cert. which gives this as an address. I assume it is Manchester as they were living in Salford near there a few years earlier and stay there for the next census.
It's not Leasowe, Wallasey and doesn't seem to be anywhere in Buckinghamshire.
Help much appreciated.

There's a Lea Town just west of Preston, if that's any help. Also a Levenshulme between central Manchester and Stockport - could it be Levenshulme mistranslated or misheard?

Hi Miss
Is the writing very clear or could the letters be something else ?
You could scan and email the image to someone to take another look or phone the local records office who might be able to look the place up.
If you can and want me to look at it pm me
Best wishes Joan

Thanks Joan. When son gets in I'll ask him to scan it for me.
Kate. looking at it again, although the writing is very clear it could be a mishearing of Levenshulme couldn't it? Wonder what the Bucky could be?
Thanks for your help.

There may be a clue on the census records.

I realise it's a bit far away but there is a town called Buckie in Scotland

Christine

Christine Report 9 Oct 2008 20:42

Thanks Alan, but it's a definite 'y'. They don't seem to move from Lancs for generations!

Joan volunteered to look at a scanned image earlier but I think she is offline. Would anyone else take a look for me? I'm also puzzled about John Harrison's occupation.
Please pm me if you can and I can email it to you directly.
Many thanks for everyone's help.

Hi Chris,

Looks like John Harrison is a Gas Fitter...sorry I can't help with the address.

It looks like Leasome Buc*y to me (could be a k or h?).

Christina.

Thanks Christina

Did people have gas routinely enough to have fitters then? (1868)
Looks like gafs doesn't it? Wondered about corruption of gaffer.

Thanks for everyone's help. Joan has suggested the word could be an abbreviation for buildings. Will look into this tomorrow.

Just wondering if he's given the address of his place of work and it's Leasome Bricky?

Christine

Christine Report 9 Oct 2008 23:09

Wow yes, that could be it too! Loads to look into tomorrow. Thanks again.

Hi Chris
Well. I have looked and don't know if I can't see for looking but can't find Leasome Buidlings on the 1861 or 1871 discs of Salford.
I think a call to the local bibrary might be your next step. Maybe they will know about the local brickworks of that time too.
Good luck and let us know,
Joan
