Seriously can you take a look at the school records for Repton for the details of those Meashams on the log. Also I would like to know where the ' common little oiks would have attended please.

Hi Gooner..........I have checked that matlock hold various records about the measham family Title Deeds..1275-1702..which might be beyond our scope.......but I do , or will have, access to the Repton School Records....and if you're very good I might send them to you next week if you send me your Emaill on PM...........as for thje oiks..the great unwashed of Repton..or elsewhere for that matter........as an ex schoolteacher i can tell you that the oiks didn't actually get educated till about 1860..in Ragged Schools or later in Board Schools.........they went upo chimneys at the age of eight or worked in factories at the age of ten..etc..etc.....poor little.b....................s

LA..you're ignoring me!!!.have had a good look at the Repton School Records............I think you'll find them disappointing .......
I think the school began in an egalitarian way..but as it grew....became more an more elitist...........just looking at the people who went there and then went on to be very important and famous is very illuminating.......however.here are the Meashams of Repton School......

William Measham 1675..John 1675 and Thomas 1676..all sons of William measham..a weaver..

Thomas measom and John Measom 1714 born 1705 and 1707 respectively..sons of Thomas measom Labourer......


Gilbert Meakin son of Richard 1776

John Measham b22.04.1791 son of Samuel and Mary entered the School Nov 1800

Richard Measham born 21.04.1827 was at repton August 1837 to June 1846.........son of GEORGE MEASHAM who married Rebecca Ann.(or Ann Rebecca) WARD 23.03.1826

Richard became a cambridge BA 1850 and became a Royal navy Chaplain.....he died 26.06.1897

Rbert george measham b 22.01.1839 was at Repton School 1850-1855..son of Robert.died 12.10.1879

It was this Robert Measham who married into the Mugliston family..marrying Hannah Mugliston 21.07.1834........the Muglistons were one of the posh git families of Repton........

None of this may be of any relevance to you..but..its a great social document..

Very interesting reading I agree. I am working on trying to link this bloomin family together but now near to giving up you will be relieved to know LOL. My second cousin (a Measham) is very interested in the information that is coming over too. Thanks for your hard work I do appreciate it and as for the scotch for every illegitimate child you find I must owe you several cases LOL.

HI Derek, just reading through the Repton School records . Now do you think Gilbert Meakin is Measham the one that married Mary Meakin then Mary Parker??? A little more investigation could be needed here ,is there any trace of a Richard Meakin or was he one of the many Richard Meashams??? What are your thoughts on this

Hi LA.....I think, on balance the Meakins and the Meashams are two different families......I remember giving you a Measham from the Parish Records and it states "signed Measom"..or was it the other way round??? I think Masom, Measam, Measham are the same.......and it was definitley a Measham who married Mary Meakin...........I believe he married twice...and your "missing Gilbert" is in fact him........

I went to Matlock on Friday and gave the Meashams one final going over,,,if there were another Gilbert I'd have found him.......and, by the by..I had a look at the Meashams on the modern Disc.....1864.1953..and have noted Meashams........will send you details later......the last Measham born at Repton had three children baptised on the same day.......

Good idea to stick to one thread it is less confusing, I will make sure I have all info off this one and then if I need anything else I will use other thread. I would dearly love to know who Gilberts parents were but I don't see that happening so I think I may have to lay him to rest on this thread LOL.

Hi Red..........the information you gave me of a wedding etc of Logdens at Bakewell......is almost impossible to trace without further information........I found the records of Bakewell for the dates you gave.........unfortunately no such marriage took place at Bakewell..nor do the family of Longden or Longdon appear anywehre in those records.

The problem is that although events such as births marriages and Deaths may have been registered at Bakewell..which in fact a Registration area..as well as being a Parish......such events will have taken place in any of many close by Parishes..and will appear in those Parish records.many of them i have, but it will be a helluva job to go through them..particularly as most og them only go to 1860...fpr a marriage in 1946 or biths 1922..you can order the Certificates........

HI Derek it is Gilbert born 1747. May seem a silly question but how far back to parish records go ? I have collected all info from this thread so I will now use other one from now on.

From memory I gave you Repton Meashams from about 1600..................Gilbert Measham 1747 married Elizabeth Stanley 1772..he was the one who signed himself as "Measom"...

Hello Marissa..........difficulty is that Beighton is right on the border with Yorkshire.......the Mossborough Sheffield Rotherham Area......I have been unsble to find what you're looking for as yet because i don't have the Beighton Parish records.......and I don't have records for South Yorkshire..but I have found some bits and pieces that you don't have.

Although i can't find the Birth if WILLIAM WALLER..the son of Joseph and Elizabeth....I have found him in 1841 married to an Elizabeth, with two children Elizabeth and Thomas.......

In 1841 also.JOSEPH WALLER is living with his wife Elizabeth and the two children Joseph 24.12.1820 and Elizabeth 22.10.1826..both are baptisms.not births......this is at rotherham

I can tell you that Joseph's daughter Elizabeth married a William Woodhead (fifteen years older than she) and in 1851 they are at Catcliffe land Joseph senior is living with them (father i9n law).and there is a "stepson" Thomas Waller aged 5...this probably means Thomas was batised (as Waller) before Elizabeth married Mr Woodhead....

In 1861 old Joseph is living alone in Catcliffe aged c66...a widower..

I do have the Beighton marriage records for the period till 1812.......and from them it is possible to give you a few possible hints........

Thomas Waller married Esther hewitt 31.05.1789.......their sons Valentine and Geroge were born 1813 and 1815 respectively.......since the marriage is the only one in the right time=scale..it seems reasonable that they had other children at Beighton..one of them might have been Joseph in c1794/5/6

Wondered if it would be possible for you to do couple of census look ups for me,

The first is for Samuel Stone i dont have his exact year of birth i believe it was approx 1826 and his wifes name was Hannah born c1822 both at weston-on-trent, they married in 1848, i would be grateful for any census's that you can find them on.

and the second is for Henry Stone b. 1849 weston on trent and his wife was elizabeth martin b 1851 married 1869 again any census's that you can find them on would be a great help and much appreciated.

Hello Emily..this is a strange one..because the only thing i have found Census-wise at the moment is SAMUEL STONE bapt 24.02.1828..living in 1841 (with the Henshaw family) in the same street as his parents and their other children.!!!...maybe this was only for census night..but its very odd...I'll look further into this.

SAMUEL STONE baptised 24.02.1828 was the son of ROBERT STONE and HANNAH nee WALL.who married at Weston 30.05.1848

Samuel married HANNAH EATON 30.05.1848....but as yet no sign of him on Census..di they emigrate?????

As for HENRY STONE..no sign of his birth....but his marriage is interesting.........
As you say he married Elizabeth martin..but in fact he didn't!!

ELIZABETH MARTIN was baptised at Kirk Hallam Derbys 12.09.1847 daughter of William and Mary Martin..and she marriedJAMES FRENCH 16.06.1867 at Kirk Hallam.......TWO YEARS LATER!! 06.07.1869 the same girl, with the same parents married HENRY STONE!!

Very interesting information you have found!!!! Was it possible Elizabeths husband died? Or maybe she was a bigamist!!!!!!

I don't think they immigrated, but I can't be 100% sure and I can't ask my grandfather as he is no longer with us. I will ask other relations to see if I can find anything out

But if you find anything that would help I would be very grateful
