Arthur Ernest Kirby, was in the 7th Dragoon guards. I have found his medal records, Victory & British, & his regimental no was D/1259,389428. When he married in 1919 he was listed as a sergeant. I have copies of his marriage (8/2/1919 in Portsea) & death certificate (22/10/1965 King Edward Hospital, Midhurst). He was born in 1889, his wife was Gladys Searle & his father named as Michael on their marriage certificate. Despite all this I don't know where he was born so am at a loss as to how to get further. Can any information be obtained from the regimental no? Thanks for any help

Cornish Sue - none of the death certs I've obtained show place of birth -
Julia - His service records should have his d.o.b His service records may give the date he joined up. He would have had to have given an address for next of kin - and as he wasn't married then - it should be his parents. I went to National Archives Kew to view records.

Just a guess on my part, but seeing he was a military man, and perhaps was his father also, could this be him on the 1901 census, and could be the reason you cannot find him

Thanks for your suggestions. None of the certificates (birth or marriage) give place of birth. Do I have to visit Kew to see Military records? I was always told he was from Ireland(which fits in with 7th Dragoon Guards) & we have some 'family' ornaments from India but I was never told he was born there. Also my Dad & his brother went to the Duke of Yorks Royal Military School (Dover) but it was an Army school & they were an army family. I have seen the census returns mentioned but am frustrated by the lack of any certainty in view of the amount of information I have. That's why I hoped his regimental no. might help. To add to the problems his father is just listed as 'pensioner' on Arthur & Glayds marriage cert.

Portland Rose & others, The witnesses were Walter Victor (so you & lost for words were right about the brother!) & Catherine Susannah Prosser(?). If he was born in India it would explain why I couldn't find the family on census returns until they were, presumably, sent to England to school. i will transfer my search to India & persevere with army records. Thanks for all your help.

I have now found the family on the 1891 cesus by tracking brother Walter Victor. Father Michael was listed as born in Waterford,Ireland & mother Susannah as born Co Down. That ties in with what I had thought so am fairly confident this is the right family. I hadn't thought of tracking them through the brother - Doh! Thanks for your input.
