I am trying to find out about the history and habitants of Butterthwaite Wheel. I know that some of my direct ancestors lived there as they show on the 1841 census. These were William Hulley, his wife Harriet, their children and Harriets mother Elizabeth Woolhouse. It is the Woolhouse family that I am interested in. I have found a Jonathon Woolhouse living at Butterthawaite Wheel on the 1861 Census, and I am sure they are related, but I do not know how.

Am I right in thinking that it is possible to find out who lived in a particular property. If so could someone tell me how to go about this.

Hi Jim,

Thanks for the information. I managed to find jonathon on ancestry and by putting in C007522 in to family search I came up with two Jonathons and Jonathon 1825 parents of jonathon Woolhouse and Elizabeth. I am not sure what the other codes represent. Perhaps I am not using the web site properly.

Also, my reason for trying to find out about Jonathon Woolhouse was to try and establish if he was related and how to Harriet. I know loads about William Hulley but I am really struggling with Harriet. Ultimately I would like to find out who her parents were. I thought by going sideways and establishing who her siblings were this may help find her parents.

One of the problems is that Harriet was born c1810, a good few years before both Jonathons and was married in Rotherham on the 31st Oct 1831 in Rotherham.

I cannot find the 1841 but there are no relationships given. So how do you know that Elizabeth is Harriett's mother?

Sherbert Rose Report 25 Sep 2008 11:57

Hi Jim, this is the 1841 census. Elizabeth Woolhouse is with the family on the original copy. and I Know that Harriets maiden name was Woolhouse. If I am honest, I don't know for sure that Elizabeth is Harriets mother but taking on board her age and surname, it is a reasoned guess.

Hi Jim, I have just realised this. However, it is quite a coincidence that the births on the family search website coincide with the names on the 1841 census
and I think it is conceivable that wootham could have bbeen mistranscribed as Woolhouse.

Harriet Woolhouse at St Mary's, Ecclesfield on the 19th June 1814. My concern is making assumptions!!

Hi Jim,

I knew you wouldn't let me down!!

Two points. Firstly, in order to prove or disprove the Wootham transcription on the 1841 census I looked to see if I could find the family on any other census returns - I couldnt.

And this is the naughty bit. I was told of the Christening for Harriet at st. Marys Ecclesfield. The bit I didn't say was that her parents were Jonathon and Elizabeth.

However, the part that is really interesting is that I think you have found a second marriage for Harriet. William ulley died in 1848.

I will investigate this further.

Many, many thanks, Sandra

Hi Jim, if I order the marriage certificate for Harriet will it still have her fathers name on it or is this information only on first marriages? The marriage certificate would validate Harriets father.

Hi Jim,

I hope you don't mind me coming back to this thread and asking for further help, but it is still nigling at me.

You found on the 1851 census Harriet living with her Sister. I am guessing this would actually be the the wife of James Unwin - namely Susannah Unwin. Therefore it ould seem logical that her maiden name would be Woolhouse. I can not find a Susannah Woolhouse on either ancestry or igi. I did wonder if Susannah had married twice and I did find a Susannah Machen but can not find a Susannah Woolhouse marrying any one called Machen. This is really bugging me now.

If you have the time to help I would really aprreciate it as I don't like leaving reasrch unresolved.

Must have been having a senior moment. At least there is no point in trying to find Susannah Woolhouse. Problem Solved.

Thank you. Sandra
