I'm just trying to order some certs online from GRO using my Nat West Maestro card, and am being told to fill in more details for this secure code thing that I've never heard of. Do I do it? Just checking thaat this is not a scam or something (I have a suspicious mind)

it is just& only the last 3 numbers on the ** back **of your card,,,,,,this is called the secure code......or security code

Assuming that it isn't the three digit security code on the back of your card, it may be similar to the new Halifax secure code which I came across yesterday.
I have a Halifax debit card on my bank account and have always used it online as normal, just filling in the card number and the three digit security code from the back of the card,but they have now introduced an extra layer of security to protect card use on line. I was diverted and had to sign up and create a password etc. Now when I use a website whose merchants belong to the new scheme, I have to fill in certain letters and numbers from my password. It is so that if anyone steals your card, they can't order things on line because they won't be able to fill in the correct bits of this new password.
I have a Tesco credit card and they have had this extra security scheme for ages

No, it's not just that - it's another form to fill in that they say is to prevent fraudulent use of your card online. I'm probably being overly suspicious but when it asks for my date of birth etc.....

Sorry, answered Kay as you wrote. It sounds like the same thing - I was just very wary as I'd never heard of it.

If you are using GRO gov site ,I have not heard anyone having any fraud attatched to their cards,,,,,,,,

After 3 prompts, if you don't register your password you won't be able to shop at participating retailers' sites. It's important therefore that you pre-register a password for your debit card now, or follow the prompt to register whilst shopping online in order to complete an online purchase.

so if you don't want to register via the pop up box, go to your Natwest bank site and sign in (I assume that you will only be able to do this if you are already registered for internet banking, if not you will have to ring them up or go into your branch to do it) You can then set up your password, the form does ask for your dob. You can then continue to shop online. Without it, you are not going to be able to use that card on the GRO site, more banks are joining this scheme all of the time to prevent fraud

It's a password you set up for your debit/ credit cards - it seems to come up on some sites and not others.

If you haven't set up a password then I think you can click to say you haven't set one up yet.

I'm surprised the bank hasn't written to let us know about this.

I was surprised and a bit suspicious when it happened to me the other day when using my Halifax debit card, but luckily, i knew about the scheme because the Tesco credit card has been using it for some time. Not all online retailers use the scheme, but more and more do because of the risk of fraud.

I'm glad you were suspicious too! I'd have been even worse had it been someone I hadn't dealt with before - but I've never had any trouble with the GRO so was inclined to trust it.

Ive got it set up - its a dobuel security thing - you dont have to do it but I have (and I keep forgetting the password - lol). Its an extra layer of protection if someone has got your card details.

I also have it,but thought you had an option to use it or not

I didn't seem to have any option from the GRO.
It's set up now, anyway.

Yes, with Nat west you have to complete the on line form and they do ask you your date of birth etc. Once you have set up your password it will be Ok to use your card. quite a few sites ask for it now we have found.

It's not only Abbey! I am with Nat West and have the same problem. I am also running out of passwords.

I wonder how many other people are having the same problem and think it is unique to them?

My mum was also having "rejected password" problems until I did her online shopping and discovered that all passwords required one capital letter and two numbers.
As she kept forgetting to enter the first capital letter it constantly asked her to set up a new password each time, which of course required D.O.B etc. to verify her identity.

So just make sure your password is entered exactly as the original.
