Christine, thank you for that information. I will use it. Sylvia, thank you for that.... I have gone right through the 54 pages of the 1861 Census for the Barracks.... I do believe you are right and he was a servant. Soldiers are recorded as Sappers etc or by rank. He got his Chelsea Pension so I must follow the Royal Engineers as being his employers. |

or could it be literal .......... a servant to the establishment, ie the regiment. |
