I often though, regarding "of this parish" - it must have been a very handy way to marry without a parent's approval (if a parent didn't approve of the marriage for some reason). |

Thanks for your input everyone. Now the curious thing is to find out why their births don't appear on Scotlands People. |

An archavist at Westminster Archives said that to be "of this Parish" meant they only had to live there for 3 weeks prior to the Wedding.........so not a very good indication of where they were born or normally resided, I presume that wasn`t exclusive to Westminster and would apply to all regions. |

Also, one of their residential qualifications can often be fictitious or nominal, to avoid paying for the reading of banns in two parishes. I've several examples where she's living with her parents at 123 Hutcheon St or whatever, and he's shown as living at 125 Hutcheon St or whatever (and I've no reason to believe the later, and sometimes reasons to disbelieve it). |

Sadly it doesnt mean they were born there just that they lived or worked there. |

Hi, I wonder if someone can clarify the above phrase for me please, which is used in a Scottish marriage record (copy found on Scotlands People) for some of my husband's ancestors. Does it mean that both parties were living in the parish (Houston & Killellan) at the time of their marriage, or does it mean that they were born there? |
