Potty,

There is a tree on Ancestry that looks as if it has your Bennett family in it but no further info on William.

Thanks Potty,

Trawling has been my life the past week! It's usually great when other pairs of eyes are looking too, I know I have missed things in the past which others have found. Without help I would have been completely stuck before.

As it looks like William was in the navy, perhaps he married abroad?

Have you tried putting his name in the search box on this site? He may be in someone elses tree.

Re your first post about short cuts to finding marriages - use the partial Freebmd on Ancestry (not the complete), you can then click on the page number to see the others registered on the same page.

I would suggest, though, that you give freebmd itself a try (http://freebmd.rootsweb.com/) as it is the source of Ancestry's partial Freebmd and is more up to date than Ancestry. It is not yet complete but is updated monthly. Neither it nor the Ancestry have much after 1920s. For after that you do need to trawl through the complete index on Ancestry.

Hi Gwyn,

William F G Bennett is my paternal gt grandfathers eldest son. He is the only William Bennett I am looking for.

My father destroyed all info after my mother's death in 1959 so I am basically looking for living rellies.

My grandmother Florence Ann Bennett I found along with her siblings, including William, on the 81 and 91 census. The address of Sedan Street (for the Bennett family) is correct cos that was where my Father lived when he was young.

Does that make sense?

I wouldn't worry too much about location if he did join the Navy. He could easily have married in Portsmouth, Plymouth...or anywhere else.

Are you sure that the William you are looking for was born in St Pancras in 1873?
If so, it would seem that his second name was Francis, so we need not check the marriages of all the William Fredericks.

Can you tell us how William features in your tree? Is he a direct relative.?

Sorry for delay, just got up from my senile nap!

The marriage I found in 1896 was the first likely one with a reasonable location I found. That's what prompted my question.

Re the possibility of Mary being the second wife..pass I am afraid. I have to work with what I know (hopefully) from the clue on the photo.

Re freebmd, I never think of using that cos I am linked through to Ancestry on FTM and usually just open up Ancestry when I start independent searching. (Told you I was dim).

Any help would make my week.

Thank you

Sue

May be Mary is a second wife. When you say you have been trawling bmd - have you not used the name searchable freebmd?

Thanks for replies.

I still haven't found him on the 1901 census I have him in 1891 where his employment was a carpenter joiner.

However, I was sent a pic this week and on the back it states it was taken in Portsmouth. He appears to be wearing a naval uniform. Pic dates to around 1910-1915. Also on the back he is referred to by name and his wife as Mary.

Also his eldest child looks about 16ish, difficult to judge I know.

Hope this helps a little.

Thanks Sue

Where is he in 1901?
Perhaps we can match his and his wife's details in other census.

I find it easier to use freebmd then click on page number to show others on the page, and check if neccessary on Ancestry if I want to order cert.

I have been trawling through marriages for

William F G Bennett b. 1873 St. Pancras.

Someone thought he married a Mary.

I have located a marriage on Q4 1896 in Bethnal Green 1c 514

How do I input the date and page to search for the bride on Ancestry?

I don't want to keep trawling if there is a shortcut.

Sorry to be so dim :-((

Thanks

Sue
