Not your Samuel.
There's a blurry "Saml Kershaw" a=3m in 1841:
1841 England Census Civil Parish: Rochdale Hundred: Salford County/Island: Lancashire Country: England Street address: Stoneyheads Registration district: Rochdale Sub registration district: Blatchinworth and Calderbrook
James Kershaw 35 Lancashire, England Dyer Hannah Kershaw 25 Lancashire, England Mary Kershaw 7 Lancashire, England Samuel Kershaw 2 Lancashire, England Saml Kershaw 3 Mo Lancashire, England John Kershaw 3 Mo Lancashire, England

The same family in 1851:
1851 England Census Civil Parish: Castleton County/Island: Lancashire Country: England Street address: Union Street Registration district: Rochdale Sub registration district: Castleton Without ED, institution, or vessel: 1a Household schedule number: 170
James Kershaw 44 Littlebrough, Lancashire, England Head M Cotton Loom Weaver Power Hannah Kershaw 37 Todmorden, Lancashire, England Wife M Mary Ann Kershaw 18 Todmorden, Lancashire, England Daughter U Cotton Mill Operative Samuel Kershaw 12 Todmorden, Lancashire, England Son Cotton Mill Operative Susannah Kershaw 10 Todmorden, Lancashire, England Daughter Scholar William Kershaw 2 Castleton, Lancashire, England Son
Source Citation: Class: HO107; Piece: 2244; Folio: 229; Page: 45; GSU roll: 87261-87263.
I now read the blurry "Saml" as "Susnh" Lancashire BMD have the following entries for 1841 births: KERSHAW Susanna Blatchinworth and Calderbrook Rochdale BC/2/186 KERSHAW John Blatchinworth and Calderbrook Rochdale BC/2/187
corresponding to Susanna's GRO index ref for 1841q2 Rochdale 21 672 (with John's on p 672 or possibly 673).
Finally, note that all Kershaw births from the Spotland Further sub-district are spelled as Kirshaw at this time.

In the 1841 the enumerators were supposed to round all ages down to the nearest 5 - hence a 39 year old would appear as 35 and so on. This was not followed for youngsters under 15 though.
In some cases the enumerators give the right ages anyway, but if you look and see a lot of ages ending 5 or 0 you know they have followed the rounding down rule (when I first started this I thought Id found a family with 15 year old triplets on the 1841 - psml)
With this particular kiddie, it may be that mum died in childbirth or shortly after and was in fact married to one of the sons or was the illegitimate son of one of the daughters. The only way to find out is to buy the birth cert.

Ages are often out by miles on the census (especially on the 1841).

Thanks Kathleen
I did find that one but James and Sarah's ages didn't match with the 1851.

I think this might be the same Mary Kershaw in 1841. I suspect that the grandson Samuel is the son of one of her unmarried daughters:-

I have a census page which states the place of birth of one of the children as "Dry Dock" - all the family (including this child) were born Lancashire.
This child is living with his Grandmother (Head) and I would like to know who his parents were.
This is the family (1851, Rochdale):
Civil Parish: Wuerdle and Wardle Ecclesiastical parish: St John County/Island: Lancashire Country: England
Registration district: Rochdale Sub registration district: Wardleworth – Address = Small Bridge ED, institution, or vessel: 1c Neighbors: View others on page Household schedule number: 110 Samuel Emmet 10, Nephew, born Heywood, Lancs James Kershaw 33, Son, Woollen Weaver born Paddock Wood, Lancs Mary Kershaw 66 Washer Woman (Head) born Green, Lancs Mary Ann Kershaw 3, Granddaughter, Butterworth, Lancs. Samuel Kershaw 10, Grandson, Dry Dock, Lancs Sarah Kershaw 41, Daughter, Woollen Spinner,Paddock Wood, Lancs
Has anyone got any ideas?
Thanks, Annette
