I would be most grateful if someone could spare a few mins. to look at the occupation of someone in the 1861 census as it is not too clear to me. |

Going off the S for scholar, would think it starts with S and could be Seaman spelt without the first a. |

Yes Jeanette, it does look like seaman, his father was a "mariner" so maybe John followed in fathers footsteps. I am unable to find him in the 1871 census at the moment but I will carry on searching. |
