Thankyou so much Richard

My head was battered from trying to make the connection. I have pages of lists of possible names and wasn't getting anywhere. Its one of those links which doesn't move me much further along but was really annoying me as I couldn't find it.

Thanks to all the other posters who have helped also.

Hello Melanie, no luck?

I searched all William Gregory marriages in the Greater Manchester area yesterday & tried to connect them to a Cresswell marriage with no luck either.

You asked abt the mother's maiden name on birth certs. It depends on the individual. I've seen both situations using either former married name or maiden name.

Thanks Richard

No Butterworth marriage either ! Have contacted several Cemeteries in Rochdale but haven't been able to find where William is buried to see if anyone else is with him. Have 2 more possibles to go tomorrow.

Thanks

There is a Margaret Cresswell living in Rochdale in 1901:

Name: Margaret A Cresswell
Age: 17
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1884
Relation: Daughter
Mother's Name: Emma
Gender: Female
Where born: Saddleworth, Yorkshire, England
Civil Parish: Milnrow
Ecclesiastical parish: Newhey St Thomas
County/Island: Lancashire
Registration district: Rochdale
Sub registration district: Butterworth
ED, institution, or vessel: 11
Household schedule number: 201
Arthur Cresswell 12
Clara Cresswell 13
Emma Cresswell 43
Florence Cresswell 10
Hannah Cresswell 15
Margaret A Cresswell 17
Maria Cresswell 8
William Cresswell 18

... here's her birth:

Births Jun 1884
Cresswell Margaret Ann Saddleworth 9a 255

... and a possible 1st marriage:

Marriages Sep 1910
Brierley Annie Rochdale 8e 32
BUTTERWORTH William Rochdale 8e 32
Cresswell Margaret A Rochdale 8e 32
Whittle Thomas Rochdale 8e 32

... so maybe someone can find a marriage between William Gregory & either Margaret Butterworth or Margaret Whittle, sometime between 1910 & 1922?

Hi

Am getting a bit confused .. so would it always give the mothers maiden name on a birth record, even if there was a previous marriage ?

Thanks

Thanks all

I found the Cresswell link to but couldn't link it to the marriage with William.

I have now re-read through all my Aunts notes where she flits from decade to decade and person to person and it is hard going to read ! I have found a sentence which says my brothers wife is Margaret in Rochdale.

Am now going to look for a Margaret Gregory death in Rochdale to try and narrow it down.

Thanks for looking.

Aha! The Gregory/Cresswell birth caught my eye earlier. For Edna to have sons in the early 50s you'd expect her to be in her 30s or younger. Making her birth c1925.

However I couldn't find a Gregory/Cresswell marriage (a male Gregory) that fits the bill. This makes me wonder if Edna's mother had been married before. If that was the case, her maiden name would be on her children's birth certs but her married name & maiden name would be on her marriage cert with her married name used for the index.

You'll definitely need to get Edna's birth cert to find out who her mother was.

Hi

Am fairly sure that Edna was an only child as my Aunt only mentions her and was very specific when recording names and occupations.

I am guessing that she would have been born c1910 due to when she had the children.

I am a bit reluctant to buy her marriage cert yet as William is my Grandmothers oldest brother and am just trying to fill in some gaps to complete that part. I am only tracing Edna to try and find Williams marriage.

Thanks for your help everyone

Melanie
