I am absolutely convinced all these children belong to the same family and the usual explanation would have been "first wife died and man remarried' but in chronological order as follows:
Father (common to all those I have birth cert. for) Joseph Belfield (baker) of Longnor Staffs All children born in Longnor.
Ann Belfield born 31 /8/1840 Mother = Mary Bradbury Thomas Belfield b ca 1842 mother unknown Joseph Belfield b. ca 1846 mother unknown Sarah Belfield b 7/4/1847 mother Mary Fox James Belfield born 18/5/1850 mother Mary Fox Mary Belfield b ca 1852 mother unknown Martha Belfield b 16/2/1854 Mother Mary Bradbury Dolley Belfield b 25/6/1856 Mother Mary Bradbury Charlotte Belfield b 23/4/1858 Mother Mary Fox John Belfield b 17/9/1861 Mother Mary Bradbury
I have marriage cert for a Joseph Belfield marrying a Mary Bradbury in 1839 but the marriage takes place in Prestbury Cheshire. I assume this is the Prestbury nr Macclesfield which seems a long way away from Longnor. Thanks in anticipation!

Were all these children together on the census returns?
Was the mother's details the same in more than one census?
Wonder whether she had been married before so perhaps used previous married name or maiden name depending on what the registrar asked her. Who registered the births of the children you know about - was it Joseph or Mary?

As you have the Belfield / Bradbury marriage I had a look to see if I could see a Bradbury / Fox marriage. The only one I can see is this from IGI but as you can see it's the same year & in Norfolk.

I am wondering what Mary's mothers maiden name was. It might have been either Bradbury or Fox. If Mary was asked what her second name was she might have given that. My reason for saying that is that my gt grandmother upon marriage took her mothers maiden name as her middle name, so from being Jane Taylor (birth cert) she became Jane Bickerton Auger after marriage. Her mother did the same thing, went from Harriet Bickerton before marriage to Harriet Webb Taylor after marriage. (A very handy thing for us genealogists.) As Jill said, it depends on how the registrar worded the question. Huia.

It also depends on whether the father registered any of the births as he may not have known, say, his wife's maiden name - perhaps he only knew her as her previous married name.
