Can you point us to the entry. It could be that the registration was amended in the September quarter. |

if the index ref number has been altered to read something like,,ie,,1b 123,to ---,1b 112233/s--1b 112233/a usually by hand then a surname or full name change has taken place will appear beside those birth indexes from mid 1960's.. |

In such instances it is highly likely that for a birth the child in question has been re-registered under Section 10 of the Births and Deaths registration Act 1953 because the father's details have now been included to the birth entry details. |

Obviously I will not put the details on as it is such a recent record but we have basically found out that my terminally ill MIL had another son before she got together with my husband's father. We knew she had 1 son from her previous marriage and now we have been informed she had another child. This child's surname is the same as her 1st husbands. |

A re-registration of a child can only be in the natural parents names not a step-father's name. So the previous details I gave are only relevant to the natural parents of a child. If a child was given up for adoption, the original birth entry would only be annotated with the word 'adopted' next to it. The adopted registration would be with general registrar office in the names of the parents who have adopted the child. Please note that no certificates can be issued from the original birth entry; details would come from the new registration at the general registrar office with the adoptive parents details on. Please note that if an adopted child wishes to find details of their natural parents, this must go through the general register office and if they were born before a certain date, they would have to have counseling before details would be released. GRO also hold details of parents/children who would like to be contacted. |

Do also remember that if a natural mother kept her child (whether she was married or otherwise) when she marries and her husband decides to adopt her child then the mother also has to adopt the child she gave birth to. This enables both parties to have equal rights with regard to the adopted child. |

Thank you for your replies - The mother never married the second partner but it is really helpful to hear all the possible scenarios. |
