Sheila Report 8 Jul 2008 18:21

Hi Mike

Sorry for delayed response - only just found this. As ever sterling work on your behalf for which I am most grateful. The 1861 census is of little moment as the family has turned up mistranscribed in Ilkeston of all places!

I too had come to the same conclusion, that we have parallel families and that the Churchgate family is not mine, but belongs to someone else on here, although there may be a connection further back.

My lot seem quite interesting as Charles was born in Bengal in 1821 (India Office records) and his mother in Madras in 1803. I await a copy of his parents ' marriage entry. The question is whether his mother was actually Indian or whether she was an 'army brat'. The Birstall branch of the family believe she was Indian... so this looks like even more work to do!

The extra names on the grave particularly interesting as it now looks as if Ann's three marriages produced eight children instead of the five I thought, but three died young.

Thanks again

Sheila

Greeting’s again Sheila

Following an in depth look at the Baptisms registers at the Records Office
for St. Margaret’s Parish Church. Leicester 1842. ~ 1856.
Having 1st made a list of all children born to either
Charles & Mary Bodycot
or Charles & Mary Anne Bodycote.

I came to the conclusion that these were TWO separate Families.
Charles & Mary Bodycot seem too live in South Church gate.
And Charles & Mary Anne lived in Eaton Street ( which is two streets away from Denman St. and Denmark St. is two streets away from Denman St.)

Registers read thus :~

Entry No.2614. 24th. Sept. 1852.
Mary Ann. Daughter of Charles & Mary BODYCOT
South Church Gate. F.W.K. Henry Wood. Curate.

Entry No. 302. 24th. Dec. 1854.
Charles. Son of Charles & Mary BODYCOT.
South Church Gate. F.W.K. L. Miles. Curate.

Entry No. 687. 20th. Aug. 1856.
Henry. Son of Charles & Mary. BODYCOT.
South Church Gate. F.W.K. T. Jones. Vicar.

A MARRIAGE Found for the above ?

St. Mary’s Parish Church Leicester.
( Later to become Mary De Castro Parish Church. )

Entry No. 195.

Charles Bodycot ~ MARY SIMPSON.
Both of this Parish.

Married in this Church by Banns This Twentieth Day of February
One Thousand Eight Hundred and Thirty Seven.
By me :~ Henry Low. Curate.

Both signed the register by their own Marks
Charles Bodycot …+
Mary Simpson ….X ( No mention of Anne as middle name )

In the Presence of :~ John Martin. Charlotte NOON.
( Theres another ref to a Noon for you ...)

Entry No. 873. 22nd. Jun. 1842.
William. Son of Charles & Mary Anne Bodycote.
Eaton Street. Frame Work Knitter.. J. R. Shortland. Curate.

Entry. No.1546. 21st. June. 1849.
ANNE. Daughter of Charles & Mary Anne Bodycote.
Eaton Street. Frame Work Knitter. J.Baly Curate.

Entry No. 2280. 21st. May. 1851.
Emma. Daughter of Charles & Mary Anne Bodycote.
Eaton Street. Frame Work Knitter. .M. Edgate . Curate.

Entry No.286. 11th Oct. 1854.
Joseph. Son of Charles & Mary Anne Bodycote.
Eaton Street. Frame Work Knitter…..Charles Gerard. Andrew Curate.

I’m inclined to go with the Charles & Mary Anne Bodycote family ?

Going on later Street names on the Burial details
Remembering in was costly to move to far in those days
also Charles would not lose out on any customers he had built up
through his business.

Oh ......I seem to remember that in 1861. The Census returns for this area
Went walkies….gr. :0(((

But the choice is yours……..

Thanks everyone for your input. Mike - as always you are a star!

Mike - this burial plot - would everyone be related?

Joseph Goadby was my great great grandfather, Mary Ann Bodycott was his mother in law and Annie Riley is Ann Bodycote by any other name.

I'll trawl through the rest of the responses and see where we go, but the Bodycote family on the 1861 are still eluding me.

Thanks again

Sheila

If they are all related then I guess I'd better get the certificates for the babies as they could all be hers.

Hi Keith

Thanks for that, but I think that's the parallel family. If you go back to the 1851 you will find that family with just the one child, Thomas, living not far away from the family that Kath posted.

I'm now on the hunt for Ann with parents Chalres (b c1821) and Mary Ann (b c 1817) on the 1861 and I can't see them...at all...

Sheila Report 28 Jun 2008 17:25

On December 22nd 1867 my great great grandparents married at St Margarets Church in Leicester. He was Joseph Goadby aged 22, she was Ann Bodycote aged 19.

I have them both on the 1871 census. Joseph died in 1877, but I have Annie (as she was known) on all the censuses up to 1901 and her death reference from 1929.

On her marriage certificates (all three of them!), her father is described as Charles Bodycote FWK.

I have a Bodycote family (father Charles FWK) on 1851 and 1861 censuses in Churchgate Leicester, but no sign of Annie. I've tried all the permutations of the spelling of the surname I can think of, but I cannot find Annie as a child on the census.

I thought I had found a birth reference for her on Free BMD, JQ1849 Leicester 15 106 and then I found a death for a child of the same name (exactly) in the December Quarter!

I've not looked at this line for ages, but I've just had a Hot Match and if Annie belongs in the family I have transcribed then we are related. If she doesn't, I'm not.

Anyone fancy playing with this? I'll be on line for another hour or so and then will check back tomorrow.

Thanks

Sheila
