Sandra, children were not always put into the workhouse because they were orphans, If the parents couldn't afford to keep them they put them in, or if they moved away to work. I was doing a family history for a friend and found that a mother was in the work house with 3 of her children, by the next census she had remarried but the children were still in there. The local record office for the area might have records of the family and details of what happened to them, it's worth finding their email address. I have found quite a few very helpful and they will photocopy information if they have it, for a charge of course, but it's worth it if it would be along way to travel. |

Does any one know if or how I can find out why / when family members were in these work house type places? |
