Mmmm....

William's occupations in 1871 Glass Worker and 1881 Glass Grinder could mean he was working for an Optition in 1882 as a lens grinder....Still working with glass.

Therefore it is possible that Mary 'upped' his occupation at marriage to Optition...Well he did work for one :)
Or there was a misunderstanding of her answer to the question 'Your father's occupation?'

Chris

Update ***Athena thinks (and therefore types) faster than me!! LOL :) ***

Oh, well done Ivy - that must be the same chap, surely - with such an unusual occupation and uncommon name.

I wonder if he ended up working for opticians, cutting the glass for the spectacles?

Thinking sideways....

If William is an Optition he may appear in directories for the area.

Hopefully the area and time frame you need are covered.

Also think Britchford is a good possibility.

Sue Report 10 Jun 2008 12:43

I think it says optician for Willian thought the writings not good. Sounds wrong though because Mary herself couldn't write (She signed Hannahs birth certificate with a mark) and I would have thought an opticians children would have gone to school so maybe it says something else.

Can't find her birth - the closest to it was this entry - bit of a long shot but it's possible her name was a) misheard by the registrar and spelt incorrectly or b) mistranscribed over the years on the indexes (or it might not be her at all!).

See what you think.

Name: Mary Ann R Bridgman
Year of Registration: 1870
Quarter of Registration: Jul-Aug-Sep
District: Shoreditch
County: London, Middlesex
Volume: 1c

Actually, just seen the post above re Britchford - I think that's a good one - sounds more like Bridgford when you say it!

Does the occupation of her father look anything like the one mentioned on her marriage cert?

This looks promising. Thanks.

Hi Sue

Ok, I think I may have located Mary Ann as a baby on the 1871 census but not entirely sure.

The family is headed by a Mary Bridgford, 65, who is a widow. Living with her is her son, "W" (William?), 34 yrs, glass worker, with his wife Eliza, 23, and then there is a Mary Ann aged 5 months (noted as "daughter" on census so it looks like Mary aged 65 is the mother - but I think it means the baby is the daughter of William and Eliza).

Name: Mary Ann Bridgford
Age: 5 months
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1870
Relation: Daughter
Father's Name: W
Mother's Name: Eliza
Gender: Female
Where born: Middlesex, England
Civil Parish: St James Clerkenwell
Ecclesiastical parish: St James
County/Island: London
Country: England

Can you give the 1901 census details for us please - I have looked but cannot find any Mary Ann Howarth's born Whitechapel, with husband James. Was it mistranscribed?

Just trying to work my way backwards. I found a Mary Ann Bridgford with father William, living in Cambs - but trying to check if it could be the same person.

In 1901 she's Mary Ann Howarth living in Sheffield but recorded as having been born in London Whitechapel. My nans birth certificate shows Mary's maiden name as Bridgeford but I can't find her birth. She married James Howarth on 12/9/1982 and at that time lived at 9 Daisy Court Sheffield. Her father was recorded as William. No idea who her mother was and not much luck with finding WIlliam either.
I'd like to find out more but I'm not sure where else to look.

Sue

Unsure of your question but....

If it was before 1901 then the answer is no.

Do you want to research backwards? Do you want to find her Siblings and Parents?

When was she born and where? (county)

She's being very elusive but I do have a copy of her marriage certificate which gives her address at the time of marriage. Are there any web sites that list who might have lived at the same address at the time (in between census's)
