Hi
I am getting really annoyed - for the past 2 days i have been trying to order some certs via GRO.
Normally i use the link via 'findmypast' i can log into' findmypast' OK but on trying the link it is telling me i have either logged on the wrong e-mail address or password.
I have now obtained 4 different 'new' passwords from them via 'forgotten password' but still i cant get into the site -I have also typed in gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certifictaes/login.asp (instructions that came with new password) still it wont accept my details

Can someone plase check for me and see if the site is down?
Many Thanks
Maureen

Hi Maureen

I can't remember now if the password is case sensitive or not on there, but after you put your email address and then type in your password, are you typing the password EXACTLY as they have sent it to you?

I never go onto GRO through findmypast - I always go directly to http://www.gro.gov.uk

You could also try ordering through freebmd.........

Thanks everyone for your replies.

Yes, the passwords are case sensative and i have been VERY careful.
I have now obtained 5 different passwords and non of them will work.

I have also tried going in via the link on 'findmypast' which is the way i have always used it, plus typed in the GRO address given when they send a new password - neither will work.

I have also just telephoned and although the girl was sypathetic she couldnt help. aid all they can do it give me a new password, suggested i try on someone else's e-mail or ordered them over the phone at 8.50.

Just when i had found 4 new people and want their certs - Scream! Scream!

How much do Free BMD charge per cert?

Maureen

Maureen Report 31 May 2008 15:28

Free BMD take you to exactly the same page as 'findmypast' and it still wont work!!

If you have been sent replacement passwords, then only the most recent one will work. The earlier ones will have been overwritten each time they sent you a new one.

Hi

Ialso find it better to highlight the password, right click it and copy and then paste it into the password area

Good Luck

Yes, i am only using the current password.

When i try to log on it is telling me either the e-mail address or password is wrong. I then click on 'forgotten password' go to my e-mails, retrieve my new password and then back to log-in, and round and round i go - 6 times now i have tried it.
I have also tried registering as a new member to see what happens but as soon as i enter my e-mail address it tells me i am already a member.

Sylvia
Apart from using the links on 'findmypast and Free BMD i have also typed in the address you gave directly. No matter what way i try it always takes me to the 'log-in' page, and thats when i get asked for e-mail address and password.

Hi Jane, Maureen

- using copy and paste to input a password

- my youngest has a 17 letter/digit password and since the password doesn't come up on screen, she often forgets where she is, somewhere in the middle of the password. It hadn't occurred to me that she could type it out (in say a Word doc), check it is correct and then just use cut and paste. I'll suggest it to her next time she is exasperated at it - but meanwhile it has improved her keyboard skills no end!

- Maureen, I can see that that wouldn't be your solution - and I'm not sure that it can be fixed - you seem to have been doing everything by the book.

I think if it was me, I would register as a new user with the GRO using a completely different email address. If you just have the one email address at the moment, it is fairly straightforward to obtain a new free one from say Yahoo or Google.

[Edit - if you do register with a new email address, you could then use Sylvia's tip about leaving your password blank]

Ivy

I was just about to write to you. Thanks for your PM. i didnt get round to using the computer anymore over the week-end - i was thoroughly fed-up with it all so didnt see your message till today.

I have taken your advice, opened a new e-mail account and have finally managed to order 4 certs.
Thanks very much.

I was wondering when i started to enter my home address on GRO that they would suddenly come up and say i was already a member, but they didnt.

I still dont know how anyone can order certs without having to log in first. i have had to give e-mail address (new one) and password so presume i will be asked when i use GRO again - all i have got to do now is hope i remember it!!

Thanks for all your help everyone

Maureen

I'm glad it's sorted - I get so wound up by my own "computer says no" problems each day!
