You were right about the birth certs. Christine gave me a web address explaining what can appear in col 5. On the certs I have of the four boys her maiden name is Little and no other names are shown.

It looks a good match. I have just looked at a web address that Christine gave me, explaining about the entires that are shown for the mother on birth certs. Bearing this in mind the names given on the four birth certs for their sons shows the mother as Mary Ann Vincent maiden name Little. There are no other names.

That's the right family in the 1861 census. Except Joseph was not 7. There was a mistake made in in the census. It should have been 2, I found him on free BMD and got his birth cert.

Graham,

As Potty said the birth cert should show the previous married name if she had been married before.

This site explains about certificates

http://home.clara.net/dixons/Certificates/births.htm#COL5

I have checked some George Vincent marriages where there was a female missing on the page and also Mary Little with missing partners but didn't find anything.

Maybe their marriage hasn't been transcribed yet or one name is missing.

What year was their 1st child born and area please?

Potty Report 26 May 2008 17:44

If she had been married before, her former married name should have appeared on the birth certs.

Christine

I know the maiden name of my great great grandmother, which was Mary Ann Little. Her maiden name appears on the birth certificates of her four sons. I have searched for the marriage on Free BMD, covering from 1850 to 1865, but can not find any marriages of a Little to a Vincent. This leads me to think that she was a widow when she married George Vincent my great great grandfather. If this is the case then her former husbands surname name will be on the marriage certificate.

In 1865 George died and Mary married William Letbe. On their marriage certificate it has Mary Ann Vincent widow.

You only need one name to order the cert.

You can search Free BMD with Christian name for spouse.

If you post the details, I'll look.

Can anybody help?

I am looking for a marriage of my great great grandfather. His wife my have been a widow, if this is the case then the surname name on the marriage certificate will be different. Is there any way of finding the marriage?
