I have two marrages one year apart as follows ,
Oliver Carey married Rebecca Knight J-S 1855 Dist Lambeth 1d 489...
and
Oliver Carey married Rebecca Knight J-S 1856 Pancras London Middlesex 1b 100..
In 1851 Oliver was a soldier with the Coldstream Guards living at Tower Within Middlesex and Rebecca was a servant in St Pancras Middlesex.
Their first son James was born in 1855 London Middlesex .
I have no fathers name for either of them.
Does anyone know which area would be the most likely please or do you think it would be safer to order both certificates ?
Thanks Kim

as Oliver was a soldier it may be he married without permission of his Commanding Officer so had to remarry again a year later with the permission given. as their son was born 1855 I would get the first cert. BUT then again my curiosity would make me get both certs!!!

As you dont have any parents for them you cant know which one would be right .would be interesting to compare both certs

Oliver Carey is not a common name so like Shirley I'd want to order both certs

I see from the 1861 Rebbecca was born Bentworth Hampshire c1822 I think you need Parish records to see her baptism to establish her parents names, cant see how you can decide otherwise which marriage cert is correct if the fathers differ on each .

will take a look on the 1841 tho to see if she there

What a small world, in 1851 Oliver was working at the Tower along with my daughter's 3XG Grandad

I'm busting a gut to get to the National Archives at Kew but for now it's going to have to wait

Ok , I now have the 2 certificates .First one is for 25 th September 1855 , Oliver Carey and Rebecca Knight , full age , batch and spinster .. occupation soldier ,Residence Waterloo Rd ..
Marrage took place at St Johns Church in the parish of ( think it says Waterloo) surrey..
2nd says
Same names, same age , same occupation , same fathers name for the groom , residence Judd St,
Marrage took place on 19th August 1856 , St Pancras Church Middlesex .
The only difference in the info is the brides father in the first certificate names him as Thomas Phillips , on the second its Thomas Knight ... husbands father is the same on both certificates.
Seems he didn,t get permission for the first marrage , or has anyone any other ideas as to why they would marry twice ??
Sorry should have added PLEASE ??
Just got a bit over excited !!

Thanks for replying Jim , thats what I have , Rebeccas Mum is always shown as unmarried in the census returns .
I think these two marrages belong to one couple though , Olivers father is shown as James Carey , labourer on both ..
I think Rebecca just wanted to appear legitimate on the second marrage ...
She was marrying a coldstream guard , again ! ..
LOL
Think it may be one of those questions that will never have an answer , but at least Oliver (hopefully) knew who his father was .. that was my main aim .. his brother was my GG Grandfather and his marrage cert shows no father ..
Got a James Carey now !!

If you can one day, get to the records office and take a look at the parish register entries for both marriages - there may be a note to explain the second one. I had a couple who married twice and it turned out the first one was void because he banns wernt read properly.

Jacqui may have your answer -
I am married twice to the same man - Banns were never read. We went to church each week to hear them - they never did them, was too close the the wedding date to cancel everything. So we had the wedding with all the guests and then had a service at the church after our honey moon.

Thanks Jacqui ..would they have been told their first marrage was invalid ?
Not sure how it works but going to London later in the year , have a list as long as my arm of things to do there ...
Seems strange how her Fathers name changes from Philips to Knight within a year ..

Gossip Girl , thanks , Not sure , both certs say .. after Banns and it was 11 months later ..
But you could be right , would Rebeccas fathers change of name mean anything , 1st cert Thomas Philips , second Thomas Knight ?
