It's maddening when you buy a certificate to confirm facts...and then end up with more questions.
I have some where I think there has been a lapse of concentation and the wrong facts entered.
eg. Bride's father is shown as Janet ( bride's name ) instead of James.

If all other facts match, it would seem that you have the correct certificate, although the surname has been wrongly shown.

All the handwriting and signitures on the certificate is the same so it must be a print.

Kay????

Kay???? Report 10 May 2008 20:53

I would say the clerk at the church copied the surname in the wrong place when he was putting in the Register preparing it for the GRO, hes copied the same surname for both groom and bride,,,,,,,,,,,if it was in a chuch then the Parish Register entry could have the right surname,,,,,,,,,,

The occupation matches between cert and census.(Thank goodness he had a slightly different occupation to all the rest of the miners i've had previously!)

It's only his surname which is wrong so I think the person filling out the certificate must've put the wrong surname down.

Is it possible there has been a mistake in transcribing either the census or certificate

Sorry, no idea of her mother's maiden name.

Place of marriage was the parish church Ysradyfodwg.
Witnesses were Charlotte Edmunds and William Francis.

I think the family in Ystradyfodwg are most likely - I was just thrown by the certificate saying her dad's name was Morgan Davies rather than Harries.

Another possible is "a" Mary Harries born 1880, St Clears, Carmarthen and her father is William Harries, a Labourer.
Any clues from the certificate ie: place of marriage or witnesses

On the 1881 census it says that she was born in Ysradyfodwg, Wales.

So, I can presume either the registrar got it wrong or was told the wrong name?

I have one marriage cert where the registrar has crossed out both of the fathers names and still got one of then wrong after correcting the entry

I received a marriage cert today. (Thank you Glitter Baby for finding the GRO ref number for me).

Evan Edward Davies, 21, Bachelor married Mary Emma Harries, 20, Spinster.

Evan's father was William Davies, Mary's father is down as Morgan Davies, occ Moulder.

As she was a spinster shouldn't she have the same surname as her dad?

I looked on the 1881 census and found a Mary Emma Harries aged 2 with her father Morgan Harries, occ Moulder.

Should I presume that his name was wrong on the marriage cert? Or should I keep looking on the census for a Mary Harris and Morgan Davies?
