Is it possible to search the census records on Ancestry by place name (small village etc )

EG Bradfield - without putting any surname in

What you can do is eg:
On the 1901 put in place name say Penwortham.
2,523 names appear,
click on first name to view image.
At the top of the image it will say
You are here: Search > Census > UK Census Collection > 1901 England Census > Lancashire > Penwortham > District 2

Click on Penwortham and you will be able to view 3 enumeration districts, this will give you the names of streets on that District inparticular a certain area of that village/town.

This can be done for any village/town.

Hope this helps in your quest.
Kind regards,
Judith

As Judith says above for villages etc and you can also search on Birth place only. For instance if you go to 1891 English Census and just put Rutland under country and Edith Weston under parish it will bring everyone born in that village regardless of where they are currently living. I have found disappeared ancestors this way.

If you're on Ancestry bring up the 1901 (Exact matches only box ticked):

Should be given the blanks to fill in Residence: Country or Island: Civil Parish: Town.

Try putting said village in either Parish or Town.
Hope this works.

Jessie I don't know what you are doing wrong. I have just done it for Edith Weston and got all the village , 267 names.

Where it says Residence just put county and then name of village under civil parish

Start by putting www.ancestry.co.uk at the top of your screen to make sure you have the correct page

Scroll down a bit & select 1901 England census

Where it says "Residence" put county Yorkshire & civil parish Bradfield

But there are 10,5553 names listed!
