differences in census

in the 1891 census my great great grandfather alexander crute was living with his mother mary crute in hendon sunderland.( i have no record of his father). in the 1901 census he is living with a lady called mary canavan in ryhope sunderland and is described as her adopted son. he was born in 1885 so do you think that this could be an adoption or a mistake in the census. as on both records there is only the mother and son.

Have you seen the Army records for him on ancestry?

Right.......if you check the 1901 image..........Alexander is actually listed as Stepson..........so it appears that his mother must have married Mr Canavan at some stage..........although I can't see one

Typical the details for 1891 are on Findmypast and nothing obvious showing on Ancestry.

His father is named as Richard...........mother Mary

He had one full brother, John James Crute, and no sisters

Three children..........Richard (1909), Mary (1912) & Florence(1915)
