Thank you so much for this info Margaret, its brilliant, although it does throw up more confusion surrounding this family ( I have been trying to find the parental connection to my g g grandfather Samuel Hearndem for about 2 years now)
Looking at your info it seems that Richard therefore couldn't have been my Samuels father, and Shem snr possibly only had daughters Sarah, Mary and Ann (Gallie)(who Sarah is living with in 1861 Jersey census along with my Samuel who is 3), Samuel must have come back to Jersey soon after his birth, but whom did he travel back with, his mother? or another relative who was in America, I can't seem to see anything
For Samuel to have the name Hearnden I presume that it had to be a male relative ie his father who went to America, but I can't work out who his mother was, unless it was Mary!! Hmm mystery deepens

Hi
I would appreciate a freesh pair of eyes and brain as mine is a bit fried, my gg grandfather Samuel Hearnden wasborn in Boston USA in 1857, I have traced his father as Shem Hearnden, whom I believe his father was also Shem Hearnden born around 1776 in Lewes Suffolk, I can only find 2 entries for the Shem's in england (but have found Shem seinor living in Jersey in 1851 Census with a daughter Sarah), however, I have been contacted by a few very kind people and one has given me the Shem-Shem connection but the other has given me Shem's father as being Richard Hearnden b1772 his mother being Sarah Hod,

You may see where this is getting confusing as I have partners - sibling and children for all of the above but can't seem to connect properly as my eyes are going crossed, ancestry gives good clues but even that crosses wires

Any imput would be most appreciated
