Does anyone know what other types of institutions other than the workhouses were around in the early 1900s? I did try doing a search but because I'm not sure what I'm looking for a can't narrow it down.

Thanks Gypsyjoe

assylums?

Yeh I'm thinking of somewhere where a family might put a child for good, so I'm guessing some sort of assylum then.

Thanks Lindsey.

Yes I found one of my imbeciles there.

well I'm only going on rumour at this stage and from the sounds of it the child would have been put in such a place not long after birth or at least while very young. I have no details on sex or when the child was born, so it's a hard one to figure if it exists and if it survived.

How about the Ragged Schools? Think Barnados have historical records of the children if you have a specific name.

Also, how about Great Ormond Street Hospital they have a page on their website called small and special.

Thanks An9ie, I have no name except surname of course and there was kids born either side of this mystery child, so I'm guessing it's got something to do with the kid itself. I'll check out Great Ormond Street Hospital though the family is from the east end.
